“Hey, we can save money, help keep our employees healthier, and reduce environmental damage, what do you think?”

Was that before or after you realized that we're the only major airline (maybe regional too) that still uses a paper flight plan 😂

19 pages of pilots who burn fossil fuel for a living, debating the environmental impact of styrofoam coffee cups. Good ol classic narcissism found in our profession, got to love it.

Except that’s not how the company framed it. From the weekly update announcement:

“As part of our continued efforts to embed sustainability into everything we do at Delta, teams across Delta are scouring our operation to find every opportunity to be kinder to our planet…This action is also in compliance with international regulations for single-use plastic reductions…change boils down to a *huge* win for our planet and those who live in it…thank you for your continued support of environmental stewardship“

I’m all for doing things smarter and not being oblivious to environmental impact. Being conservative is not incompatible with caring about the environment, a lot. But let’s not pretend the company isn’t specifically touting this as being driven by liberal causes, resulting in happy dances in ‘woke‘ circles. Nor gaslighting those who see this for what it is, by the company’s own words.

Of course they are. It's win win win..a corporation saving money looks bad. A corporation saving the environment looks better. They chose the narrative that made them look best.

Does anyone actually like drinking from the styrofoam cups? It seems this entire thread is a practice area for manufactured outrage. Spending a few $ on a tumbler was a nice little improvement on every trip I've flown since.

so conservativism is not incompatible with caring about the environment, but a nonpolitical statement by the company about the environmental benefits of this move is a “liberal cause?”

Do you honestly think what the company released in that weekly update was non political? Catching nearly all the buzzwords of one side of the “political” divide’s most most favored/visible issues?

Again, I don’t care about the cups either way. They could have simply said, “Due to cost and streamlining catering, we are making this change, and it’s also more environmentally friendly too!” But they didn’t. There was an opportunity to virtue signal (about 8x in one ‘article’), and they poured it on super thick. That’s the rub, IMO. Maybe it’s my confirmation bias, but you have to admit they got a lot of buzzwords in to that thing.
