DAL's operation at DFW peaked at 35% of total airport traffic, just a hair under AAL when you consider there were other carriers; by 2004 it was down to 16%. When DFW was big, DAL in ATL was only A and B Concourse, and half of T or E (international moved from T to E). My point, they closed a major mid-country base to toss an MEC Chairman. Ask some of the saltier SLC pilots about DAL threatening to close SLC as well if the LEC didn't get onboard with concessions or the BK itself. The result of these actions and threats? The pilots VOTED YES to terminate their DB plan, that saved the company tens of billions going forward. You need an MEC Chair and a fearful LEC to pull off a stunt like that.

why does Delta not want to open up a Texas or Florida base? Seems like a ton of pilots live in those states and lots of business opportunities are there.

true on Dallas on the rise to surpassing Chicago. That city has grown rapidly in the past few years and even more so now that everyone is moving inland from the coasts.

We really don't have the critical mass anywhere in TX. AUS would have been great, but AA swooped in and ate our lunch while we watched and did nothing. MCO would definitely work, as would FLL/MIA but the company seems to have no appetite for it. Let's see how the opening of BOS goes this year, if it happens. If successful, perhaps they will take another look at FL.

Meanwhile KL and VS have started service. Also this summer we’re increasing frequency on practically every existing route.

UA opening LAS and MCO has nothing to do with domestic network growth. They have no plans to add additional service to either city. Their level of operations in LAS is comparable to ours, and less than ours in MCO.
There are at least half a dozen cities where we could open pilot bases under our current network, without any network changes whatsoever. The only thing stopping that is our current flight ops management team.

What's the old saying? Something like "never credit to malice what can more easily be credited to incompetence?" Keeping CVG open as a very small, one-category base made no sense with DTW up the road--it should have closed the same day that MEM was closed. I credit that to "incompetence" and not some E-VILL management plot to increase the number of pro-company LECs.
