But it's a fair point by game. If you have a vacation planned and are worried about holding July 4th off, follow his advice.

Wrong. Consider the pilots who are waiting to AE to a more senior fleet after they've bid their 2025-2026 vacation. There will likely be pilots who find themselves in a position where they could hold a July Vacation on their old fleet but will be unable to hold July 4th off when putting in the monthly bid in their new fleet/seat.

I haven't worked a 4th of July unwillingly since 2019. I have held 2 weeks vacation when I wanted it in months I didn't think I'd get it.
I've never been senior to ~80% in category during vacation bidding.
I held two weeks Summer vacation last year as a 85% NYC320A, and three weeks late summer as a 90% NYC7ERA this year.
You don't need to be crazy senior to hold summer vacation. Especially around holidays.
This year, I did pick up a 1 day WS to get me over the GS trigger on 4th of July, that paid like a GS.
Last year, I did a 4 day GS over 4th of July.

July 4th is the easiest of any holiday to get off:
- bid for a long trip starting on 2 Jul (first day of bid period)
- WS something (anything) in Jun that causes a conflict (not necessarily overlap) with the trip (ideally ending in Jun, so no APD restrictions remaining)
- if desired, drop/swap out of the new Jun trip
