this. This. THIS.
I got hosed as a new hire.
initial drop I was awarded NYC 73N.
Indoc awarded LAX.
They used the full 210 day conversion period.
I was stuck commuting SAN - JFK.
The class after me, 3 guys junior were in the same position.
initial drop NYC 73N
Indoc LAX 73N
Although they were awarded LAX on a Different AE. So transferred immediately (No conversion period invoked).
It stung a little bit for sure.
I would drop to Zero or as much as I could and OOBWS just anything not to go too JFK.

Hah hah.
Don’t care.
Seniority rules.
OOBWS is the inevitable outcome of a pilot group that manifestly embraces a commuting lifestyle. Junior pilots “rolling thunder” was a historical anomaly. Wasn’t going to last.
While I personally find commuting antithetical to a “balanced lifestyle”, a huge portion of the pilots here don’t. I respect that.
OOBWS are a crucial part of that lifestyle choice. (“Will I fly LAX, SEA, or SLC today?” A significant ration of SH for that..gotta commute, get hotels, etc.)
You can’t have widespread commuting (a high “pro” for MANY) without OOBWS.
No one cares about your GS “losses”. Delta isn’t a piggybank.
No senior pilot owes you anything.
(Don’t like it? Run for office and strip commuters of their OOBWS privileges. Good luck.)

Got it, in other words you don’t have a rebuttal.

I embrace OOBWS negotiated contractual rights.
I’m not alone. They’re there for a reason. They exist for senior commuters who don’t want to live in base.
If you disagree, please explain why junior pilots in a seniority based system that they voluntarily signed on for are somehow unfairly disenfranchised?
Please. Run. Enact. Make changes. (Good luck).

Using your “logic,” we’d never negotiate any changes at all to our PWA. You knew what you signed up for. Best you don’t run for any union position.

Out of base pickup at the time of coverage is a standard component of most major/legacy contracts. It would take negotiating capital on our end to remove that. Personally, I believe that negotiating capital is better spent elsewhere.

I asked him if he would ever consider transferring to Pilot Base X if he liked those trips so much. He said his wouldn't because his seniority would take a hit.

Last time I checked, we’re all here to make money.
are you familiar with the concept of “more money, more time off?” It’s the overarching blueprint of a collective bargaining agreement.
Per the staffing formula, OOBWS lets the company run with fewer pilots, violating another unionist philosophy.
should we be able to bid against each other for open time? The lowest bidder from any base gets the trip.
that is essentially the concept of OOBWS carried to the extreme.
