30 hour layovers are ok for me when it’s the last layover of the trip and you get a short penalty lap of that last day. I hate it when it’s the first layover and you get hit with 2 super early reports the last two days. Even worse when you’ve got a 4 leg day following the 30 hour layover so the next layover is in the 12-14 range not 16-18.

I go to work to work. I don’t give a rip about exploring cities and going out for dinners etc. Give me a comfortable bed in a decent hotel that isn’t a 45 minute van ride that I am forced to share with yappy FAs. I can go the the gym or go outside to get my cardio. I can DoorDash dinner if the hotel restaurant stinks. Give me a late start on day 1 and an early finish on the last day with short overnights and I’m perfectly happy.

Also, to say trips won't be as commutable is true, but are we all held hostage by commuters?
“Held hostage by commuters”?? You do know that the majority (55%is memory serves) are actually commuters.

I'd be interested in the source document for that number.

My biggest issue with 30 hr layovers is the body clock swap. It screws with me quite a bit. One of the few nice things about 717 trip construction is that you most trips are am flying or pm flying, which is a nice perk as it does wonders for fatigue/sleep. I get commuters loving the late report/early release, but it doesn't do good things for sleep. I prefer to avoid it all and just do day trips.

There was a breakdown by base published few years ago, from what I remember only MSP, SLC, and LAX had over 50% of pilots who drove to work with around 58% of all pilots commuting by air.

Can we just get the optimizer to spread the love a little bit more? I peruse open time in other bases and good god ATL320 flying BLOWS compared to other bases. Y'all's open time looks like my dream schedule. So many 1 and 2 leg days. I'm jealous

Respectfully,

obligatory “bidding ATL is a choice”

but you are absolutely right. I’m a junior CA who has not flown a penalty lap in months

a big part of DLs success is the fact ATL is 2 hours or less flight time from 70% of the US’s population. That many short flights leads to lots of penalty laps.

And the great news is, there are trips in the bid packet for that. I just had a great trip. I got to explore some cool urban parks, got to a movie theater, spent some time reading in a local bookstore and drinking tea, and even caught the first few rounds of pub trivia before heading back to go to bed. Sometimes I don't leave my room. Sometimes I explore. Just don't make trips so bad I never have a choice and get to spend it at the strip mall one exit from the airport every single trip.

just the idea of penalty laps is soooo fatiguing.
