Quite a few of the 800s and all of the 700s have the Panasonic in seat IFE.
By the 900ER being a stop gap, I mean that it will be around for a long time, but it is used to be a cheap replacement for older aircraft that need to be parked prior to the availability of the true next gen aircraft with new engine technology. Some trivia- NW actually installed TVs and monitors on the earliest 320s almost 20 years ago, but it was removed to save weight and add more seats shortly afterward. The inseat IFE is huge on TRANSCONs. FF's love it and have come to expect it. When I pre-flight and see the old tape players, I cringe. |

The 73-800 is a good jet with a dumbed down cockpit overhead thanks to SWA. My only complaints about the jet is the small cockpit and the VNAV speed (or lack thereof). It also takes forever to board and deplane with the single aisle. I can only imagine the -900 will be even slower.

Totally blows from a pilot perspective (except for the FPA availability on the PFD and vertical situation display- nifty!), even down to the much lower Vmo (330 vice 350 in the 757/767/319/320). I found the VNAV speed worked well at low speeds, but anything approaching 315-320 and it had some major issues not overspeeding. |

Or a 757-300. 224 people is a lot to come to deplane via single aisle. :D

I have to go find my happy place when I'm in the back of one of those and it comes time to deplane.

Haha. Clamp in seat 48B on the DH? Maybe if you eat some Qdoba on the flight you can clear the plane out quickly. :D

The 737 is far from the "dumbest" jet in DALs inventory. However, the overhead panel is mostly manually operated. There is a benefit from both approaches to jets actually, dumb or smart. It is difficult to transition from the dumbest jets to the smartest jets. It is probably even harder to go from the smartest to the dumbest. In my case, I am pretty sure I wouldn't choose to fly the DC-9 (our dumbest jet). It would just not be pretty. In different jets, you prioritize what is important at any given time. In dumb jets, everything is important and needs attention, smart jets tell you what is important freeing the pilot up to concentrate of phase of flight issues. |
