Do you recall how a Cessna C172 enabled Glasnost?

You can search under DB-107 Buddy Pack.

Yes, Bar, another Douglas product.

Actually, the "advanced technology bomber" project that was started under Carter and scrubbed then became the "advanced technology bomber" under Reagan that evolved into the B-2. Those jobs that Carter wanted to do away with were transitioned to jobs that developed the B-2, F-117 and C-17. It was initially a Northrop/Grumman venture that later involved Boeing and did utilize the Skunkworks. The F-117 was also born from the same research and development. Boeing, as you know, acquired MD and development for their existing projects, including today's C-17.

That's funny! I remember being at Ramstein one time and they had some F104's on the ramp, one didn't look right, it was a two seater, so I walked over to get a closer look and the landing gear was a mess. I asked about it in Ops. and the local behind the desk said, "Yeah, a student had a problem landing it, went off the end..."

I think someone said final bug speed on the 104 was always over 165...?

Nice, if you have a long, dry runway!

Sorry, meant to say Mathias Rust. I called him Rudy when we planned his little cross-country caper.

I wanted to make this separate from the political-ish mumbo jumbo:

RIP Neil Armstrong. The true definition of a beyond world class pilot and astounding humility.
