I'm not one that thinks we should hire just to hire. However I'm tired of being told what I want to hear just to close some sort of deal like I'm the last chick at the bar or something. If it was going to be like this I would rather have heard it last year.
Same goes for any JV's. Just come out and say hey this is good for the company but it is going to hurt you guys but we need to do it for the shareholders or something. Sneakiness leads to distrust. |

The company has clearly stated their fleet plan. It is to increase the mainline from the low of 720 jets to 796 jets over the next 3.5 years. They have signed contracts to do exactly that on the exact schedule they stated during contract negotiations. They have also stated that if the economy improves they could generate additional growth via slowing retirements and exercising the options they hold on the 737-900ER's. The planned 757 and DC9 retirements have both been much slower then what was projected shortly after the merger.
PS- half a year has already ticked off the clock. |

There are a number of reasons we have not hired since 2010. Mil leave returnees have come back in larger numbers than expected, pilots are flying max hours, making us overstaffed. If every line holder flies ALV +15, we drastically reduce the number of pilots needed. My category NYC 7ER A, is pretty well overstaffed right now, as are the FO's.

Does that make any sense? |

I don't know that the GS's are stopping them from hiring. Maybe slowing the process, but I'm sure they don't get thrilled at paying $214 (most junior fo on property) - $510 (senior CA) an hour. Actually most trips its quite a bit more per hour than this after factoring in work rules.

I will raise my hand and admit that I am guilty of trying to fly to the pick up limit - greenslips don't exist except in some mythical m88 day-turn-seniority category. I also fly extra in vacation months. However, I also bid reserve and try to skate too. IOW, I try to game the system for max pay and/or max quality of life. I would imagine between flying alot when I do and trying to skate when I do, I negate my effect on my category.
