Wise choice. You're already pushing your luck with that creepy dude's picture.

Probably not main-hub to large city (non-sky team hub) in Europe. While FRA and MAD are busy places, it's probable better to serve them from hubs with smaller airplanes.

Definitely not hub to hub or big city to big city within the US. "People want freq.".

The market that does work for a -400 is big hub to big Skyteam hub. Routes like JFK-LHR (slot controlled so big airplane is better), DTW/ATL/JFK to AMS or CDG would feed each other hubs well and keep CASM down. Also would feed Skyteam cargo.

That's my guess if Delta is looking at big airplanes to buy.
Maybe these are the JAL 747's we were supposed to get 2 years go.

Just another genius engineering move on Douglas's part.

So looking at the reference 744 and 77W charts from Boeing, say you want to go 6000 miles at full passenger load and cargo.

The 744 at the 875K MTOW and PW engines seems to be able to carry 416 passengers and 48,000 pounds on said mission, is that right?

The 773 would carry 301 passengers and 4400 lbs of cargo, does that seem right? Of course this doesn't seem to be the 300ER either.

hmmm. more google searching.

Well, contrary to sailingfun's postings earlier, the 744 is the second lowest CASM in the fleet, so long as you fill it up. It carries way more and flies a very similar range. The 773ER is closer to a 747-200 as far as capacity (more cargo though).

...and with a purchase price wayyyy below that of the 773ER, some lightly used 744s seem to make much more sense with DL's strategy.

UA sure makes a bunch of them work!
