The 747 sells more tickets due to its marketing presence as well.

"Fleet simplicity" was the mantra when they were parking L-10s, 727s, Classic 737s, and MD-11s as quick as they possibly could. As Sailing said they swore that our very survival depended on it......

So maybe "Fleet simplicity" will be back in vogue again?

What about putting the right airplane in the right market?

Don't get me wrong.

I thought Sailing was saying that our current management previously had the mindset to bring the fleet down to three aircraft types.

Ala, if they did get more 747-400's, it wold be opposite of what they were thinking back when they made the statement.

I guess I read too much into what he was saying, because I don't really hear anyone currently saying they are looking for fleet simplicity.

The 773 would carry 301 passengers and 4400 lbs of cargo, does that seem right? Of course this doesn't seem to be the 300ER either.

hmmm. more google searching.
Your reading the charts wrong. Use the chart for the 300ER not the base 300. Note the range each aircraft reaches a passenger only load not including cargo. Keep in mind those are weight only cargo capacities. The 777 has more cube which is what normally get used up first on mid range flights.

Had a guy in my AF Reserve unit who was/is a cargo load planner for UAL. He worked primarily 744 & 777 flts out of SFO. He said about 80 % of the time they cubed out first which favored the 777. With that it mind, they always allocated the dense/heavy stuff to the 744 which would really ring the register. I'd be thrilled to see a dozen more of each.

Edit-UAL isn't the 773ER though

Sweet. Did a redeye on Wed night myself.

Hey, that wasn't you driving that Range Rover around in LAS, was it? You know you shot up a perfectly good Maserati? Kind of harsh.

I had heard that deltas 747s could go empty and still make money due to what they are carrying in the belly, is there any truth to that?
