Actually your going to need to wait longer for that discussion. 3 years from now is when we will know the true effects. This contract really started 6 weeks ago. The bid coming will have to in the end have the same number of displacements as entitlements or something close since we are not hiring. It will however have a net gain in CA slots which is the key. There will be displacements on the FO side but a bunch of FO's will see a first time upgrade to CA. The bid to really watch will be next fall/winter when they have to start covering 5 new aircraft a month.

Ice;

I agree with your premise.

I disagree with your conclusion.

Since the merger, we have changed our class 2 waypoint crossing procedure FIVE times.

I've flown a bunch of planes. I've flown into mapshift vegas. I've watched for map shifts in south america. I've diverted for loss of nav capability over the north atlantic. The magenta line has never, ever, ever once lied to me.

Standard text is a great initiative on the one hand. The fourth floor changeout will occur and we will change the way we do everything. I would absolutely love it if we didn't.

Good points, I'm expecting to see a lot of 7ER displacements. The crew planning folks have said that the ATL 767 displacements on the FO side won't be covered, so that's 100 spots right there that won't have a place in the 7ER categories. Lets hope there is movement up, but I foresee some NYC 7ER displacements too (as all those guys keep saying they aren't flying).

Close, but surely you meant to write 82
because it is the correct number according to the bid monitor.

Exactly. Thing will change again, some academic will publish a paper saying that tailoring procedures for each airplane is better and it's better to learn the airplane specific techniques in the sim rather than on the line. We'll change everything and life goes on.

I'm not familiar with the bid monitor. I was just using the seniority lists.

I don't know about the bid monitor, but comparing the October 2009 Category List with the February 2012 Category list shows:

Oct 09 - 10 Capt and 428 F/Os = 438 pilots NBC MIL
Feb 12 - 8 Capt and 210 F/Os = 218 pilots NBC MIL

A reduction of 220.

New widebodies? Ha.

Next you'll tell me the flat screen/GPS upgrade for 88s/90s has been approved.

You're correct. The big difference is purchase cost. Each new 777-300ER costs almost 10 times more.

Regarding comparisons of our current fleet, it becomes more interesting. When you compare an equal load factor and equal yield, the lowest cost aircraft on our property is the 757-300. The next lowest cost aircraft on our property is the 747-400. Now there's no question that the 777-300ER would best the 747-400 if the purchase cost were backed out of the equation, but that's unrealistic. The fact is that Boeing has built an incredible aircraft in the 777-300ER and they know it. If you want it, you gotta pay. In fact you gotta pay 10 times more than a 747-400.

We'll see what happens.

Carl
