Could be normal partial deployment logic. I don't know the 747 systems, but other planes have a logic where if one set of wheels and thrust reverser engages, you get partial spoiler deployment until the rest of the plane settles and then you get full deployment.

That has been the fleet plan for the last 3 years. They have actually pushed back some of the retirements from the original plan. The 737-900ER cost per seat advantage is so huge it simply makes no sense to keep the 757's to fly routes the 900 can do just fine. We will keep enough 757's for the routes the 900 does not so so well on. The last 757 is projected to leave the fleet in 2024. Hopefully at that point someone has come up with a replacement. Most of the 757's going away were delivered from 86 to 91. They will average 25 years of service as they retire. The second batch of 757's that were delivered in the late 90's will stick around.

I was talking about increasing the capacity of the 757-200 to 200 seats, improving its economics against the 739/321, which has better economics.

We had 200 seats in the 757 once. It was called Song. Decent legroom also but all one class. I also never saw us have to check a bag with 200 people on the song aircraft. I think perhaps it had something to do with proactive flight attendants who were in the aisles during the boarding process making sure every bag was in the bins correctly and the bins were all filled.

Well, how about that. Maybe...just maybe, we're getting somewhere. With your previous rhetorical questions, you were clearly trying to assert that there was no pilot surplus. At least we agree to the obvious pilot surplus of today.

I didn't think our block hours were the same. I only remember hearing of capacity restraint and 1 to 2% reductions in capacity. Anyhoo, when you give up additional productivity in a new contract, it allows you to fly more hours with less pilots, or the same hours with much less pilots, or less hours with much, much less pilots. That's how it's explained.

Nobody has said anything about massive job losses. I've said we have a very large surplus of pilots aided by the additional productivity we agreed to in order to fund our COLA pay increases. Don't see how anyone can argue the contrary.

I have no idea if any of that is true. You see, I happen to know that in many cases, people "in the know" actually have no idea what will happen the next day, much less next year. All I know for sure is what I've actually seen. Specifically, tons of rumors of hiring and growth...with a reality of shrinking and AE's that have as many MD's as awards. I've seen the SD types "promise" hiring at the end of last year, only to be told I didn't read his words carefully enough. I hope these rumors are right this time, but I see no growth for Delta Air Lines...just growth for our network.
