When I got my first Capt. bid, on the MD88, I was 4 from the bottom in the junior base and right at 50%.

You had to be a big cheese to hold the ER (top 30%) but of course the ER only flew International trips back then!

Now it's down to 50%?? I guess -nobody- wants to sit reserve flying domestic trips on the 757 out of NYC if new hires are coming to the right seat and 50% of the list can hold Capt. on it.

Not arguing your factual (99) retirement numbers, but how realistic is it that only ~100 pilots will retire by year's end?

Someone posted in the past (you/PG?), that a more realistic number equals total (scheduled) retirements, plus ~10% of the list. My apologies if my assumptions/understanding of previous post is wrong.

I'm right around 6000, Timbo. I've got a little more than 10 guys below me on the Er list in NYC.


…and it sucks. No one should ever bid NYC. It's hard.

What? NYC is super easy. The high speed rail wisks you between all 3 close in airports, unless you're a "local" with a 3-5 hour drive in traffic of course. But at least real estate is cheap and the taxes are low, so you can relocate at the drop of a hat.

Bingo. And if you commute, you never have to worry about the weather. There are never any delays and the loads are always wide open.

The actual list of retiring pilots and their positions is on Deltanet.

Simply count the ones flying ER captain or above. It is much less than half.

Hahaha! I spent my childhood flying cancelled checks in/out of JFK, LGA and EWR (down the river, statue visual to 29, high speed taxi to Butler Aviation, we'd make SW look like slowpokes!)

15 years later I'm flying for DAL, based in BOS when Mo'Ron decides to close all the little bases; BOS, ORD, MIA, IAH, MSY, and some I'm forgetting sure, but 99.9% of the BOS 767 guys said, "I'll just bid the ER in JFK. Should be an easy commute with the LGA Shuttle..."

I about died laughing. I said, "You do that, and you'll have a good time commuting when it starts snowing in NY. I'm bidding MD11 F/O in ATL."

I still remember being number 45 for takeoff out of JFK in the Turbo Commode, and then the front passed, and then they spun the airport, from 13 to 31... and two hours later we got airborne.

You can have it! The less I see of NYC, the happier I am. I hear that new terminal 4 is wonderful, and then taking the sky train to the bus, to the van, to the layover sounds like a hoot!

My mom said they got a foot of snow up in NH today, while I was out sailing in a T shirt and shorts, with my dog trying to drink up the lake! Any wonder I moved south? I have not had to shovel my car out in 15 years, and no, I do not miss that! I miss playing pond hockey and downhill skiing, but I make up for that by going sailing in 84 degrees in Feb.

Weight pay was 3 cents per lb per hour. Weights set at 230k for the 57 and 407k for the ER.

Final rates as published in today's contract would be:
757 base 143.72
Hour/speed 13.24

Weight 6.90
Total 177.10

767ERint base 145.72
Hour/speed 13.24
Mileage 13.24
Weight 12.21
Total 184.41

Difference 7.31 per hour

International/nav pay was 6.50 per hour. The L1011 international paid 207.34 per hour. The 767ER never paid close to the L1011

For the new hires the contractual par rates were that convoluted back then. Much easier when they went to one rate.

Interesting math. Still looking for the 1996 pay chart. But, in 1994, a 7ER Captain made a base rate that was 36 dollars per hour higher than an MD88 Captain. Today the difference is 19 dollars per hour. That's off higher rates, so adjusted for that it would be like making 40 dollars difference from the MD88 today. That gap went away because we took a huge cut on the 7ER fleet. As I said, we are flying it for what amounts to narrowbody rates.

It's interesting to look at those old pay charts, then factor in the touching trips, 6 weeks vacation for senior guys, 1 for 2, etc... we have a lot to recoup. I know the execs have kept up with inflation, and then some.
