No more profit sharing in our next contract. Pay me for what I do. More! WOW! They taxed the joy out of my profit sharing check. With the 401k deduction, taxes and dues, I received less than half of the amount. Im thankful, though:) TEN |

Speaking of irony, did anyone else see the new Walmart advertisement? It starts out showing closed factories, empty homes on deserted streets, while the voice over is saying things like "We're rebuilding, we're brining it back, we're doing what we do best..." etc.
I thought it was an add for the city of Detroit or something like that, but at the very end, the big blue Walmart logo comes on the screen. I nearly fell of my couch! Try to find anything at Walmart that doesn't say made in China or India on it! Further tidibits...Chevy volt - developed in China using US Gov't $10B grant to GM Only fully automated car factory in China, first vehicle off the line zero defects. Yeah, we got this! |

Did it. Now I'm not a glass half empty kinda guy but.....
Why should I get a profit sharing check? I show up on time and operate the aircraft the best way I know how. Following the guidelines that Delta has developed. I do single engine taxis, cross bleed starts, say good bye to the pax, etc. And yea, I wear my hat and shine my shoes too:D. It's not because I'm a cool aid drinker what so ever. It's because that's the way I was brought up and more importantly that's what I'm paid to do. If Delta fails to make a profit it's not because I'm not implementing company policies and procedures. If Delta makes a huge profit I'm still doing the same stuff. I just want to compensated much more, on a monthly basis, for all of my responsibilities. If Delta makes a giant profit then so be it. That's great. If Delta doesn't make make a profit get some new people on the fourth floor. Bottom line. Keep the profit sharing. Pay me more. But you got a 3% COLA, so you've got that going for you! The company isn't giving it to you just because they like you. The first Billion in "Profits" were paid for by our 42% pay cut, it's amazing to me that we're only getting 8% of it back. |

I agree with your sentiments, but you get a Profit Sharing check because that's what DALPA Negotiated. Oh, and you're getting a little less this year.

I saw that ad and it reminded me of the Chrysler ad from the superbowl...Then it was Walmart. If anyone has ever been to Shanghai, and seen just one of the dozens of cities that walmart built you'd just have to be a "we're $crewed" believer.

Yeah, we got this! I agree with the view in Shanghai. If you really want to get depressed, pick up the book, "Hot, Flat and Crowded". By the same guy who wrote The World is Flat, in this sequel he goes into detail about the rising middle class in China and India and the impact it's going to have on the USA. http://www.amazon.com/Hot-Flat-Crowd...ot+and+crowded Friedman explains how global warming, rapidly growing populations, and the expansion of the world’s middle class through globalization have produced a dangerously unstable planet--one that is "hot, flat, and crowded." In this Release 2.0 edition, he also shows how the very habits that led us to ravage the natural world led to the meltdown of the financial markets and the Great Recession. The challenge of a sustainable way of life presents the United States with an opportunity not only to rebuild its economy, but to lead the world in radically innovating toward cleaner energy. And it could inspire Americans to something we haven't seen in a long time--nation-building in America--by summoning the intelligence, creativity, and concern for the common good that are our greatest national resources. Hot, Flat, and Crowded is classic Thomas L. Friedman: fearless, incisive, forward-looking, and rich in surprising common sense about the challenge--and the promise--of the future. Here's the cliff notes: There are 2.6 Billion of them, willing to do America's Jobs, for 10 cents on the dollar. How does US Labor compete with that? He thinks the answer for the US is through technology and green revolution, developing alternative energy supply, new grid, solar, wind, etc. I would agree with him on that, but you know nothing will get done, no laws will get passed requiring such, as long as the Big Oil Lobby is paying Congress to protect them. |
DALPA really can't win when it comes to the issue of profit sharing. There are two views: compensation should never be at risk or monetary reward for assuming risk.
If you are the corporation, you only want to pay out the latter. If you are the employee, you want to maximize the former. What we are doing is somewhere in the middle. And, everyone has a different point of view. My personal view is that I am an hourly worker and my compensation should not be at risk. I do risk management analysis with my aircraft. I don't want risk in my paycheck. In conclusion, I cashed the profit sharing check and my paycheck. I would prefer to cash a bigger paycheck, good times and bad times. Let Sleepy Ed worry about his profit sharing. |

As a very junior, narrow body captain starting my 28th year I'm fortunate.
I never make a decision, what so ever, with profit sharing in mind. I do my job the best I can based on the policies, procedures and tools provided to me by DELTA. I hope in the next round of negotiations we dump the profit sharing provision. It's not a reward. Based on some conversations I've had, some think that it is. |
I just learned that when you're a Roth kind of guy, selecting 70% toward your 401k in effect means you're selecting 100%. The 70% distribution is based off the entire profit sharing, not the after tax portion. I guess the part of me that wanted to contribute 100% won after all.
And BTW, ALPA does take dues money out of the money that's going toward your retirement (if it's taxable). I had read somewhere they didn't, but the claim didn't include that caveat. |

Profit sharing for us should be a totally delinked form of compensation and I personally think we should have our 5% reinstated. I've now paid for my profit sharing twice. Any future pay raises should be totally independant of profit sharing. I would have liked to have seen what the vote would have been if the company said "Well you didn't give us the 5%, so they will be non in advance, 5, 1, 1" yeah even Delta pilots would've voted that down. And that was the exact scenario the union was selling. If we didn't give back some profit sharing then our raises would be smaller. I personally don't see how they could have been. And not to pick on you but how the heck are you a "junior" narrow body Capt if you were hired 28 years ago. 86 hires can hold any widebody aircraft and are kings on the ER. |
