I gotta interupt the union stuff for a second.

We've seen the major goofs in ATL and MSP this week. The news is running with these stories and they are gaining lots of traction with the public. Reading some of the blogs out there, people are getting fired up about this.

It is me, or does anyone else find it odd that we have not had a "all call" message ... or a safety message from the Chief Pilots?

The silence is deafening.

"the old Guttenburg", classic! That's funny, I don't care who you are, that's funny! Thanks Nu.

There is a letter on the DAL net.

Since there is only one incumbent running, your entire premise is flawed. There will be new representation no matter what. No one said your views don't matter so don't get your panties in a wad. This kind of questionnaire, with no attribution, gets distributed in the name of campaign material. Whoever authorized this had bad judgment, gross poor judgment, in my opinion. You think that your personal views are the only ones allowed, but that's not the case. It is so funny how the most vocal critics start crying like little babies the first time they get hit back.

I don't know what fool thinks that only one side of the argument gets to speak, but it needs to end.

For those of you who aren't in Council 44 and/or haven't seen the "infamous" email, here is what the email said and then below that are the questions that were asked:

*****
This message is sent in accordance with Article I, Section 19 of the ALPA Constitution and By-Laws and applicable law, which require ALPA to comply with all reasonable requests from candidates for union office to distribute campaign literature. All expenses associated with this message are borne by the candidate or members acting on the candidate's behalf.
*****

Pilots of Council 44,
Please review the attached file for a Q&A with the candidates of C44 who chose to participate.

Questionnaire for Council 044 Candidates

As a candidate for Council 044, please state your position and provide answers to the following questions:

ALPA
1) Do you see any conflicts of interest representing mainline and DCI?
2) Is there an increasing influence of regional carriers at ALPA National?
3) What do you think about a “no compete” clause for ALPA representatives applying for MGT positions?
4) Do you support Lee Moak and the current MEC direction? If so, why? If not, why?

SCOPE
1) How do you view our overall SCOPE effectiveness?
2) How have the Delta pilots fared with the increasing use of international codesharing ventures?
3) What would be your response to management’s likely request to replace RJ50s with RJ90s (76seats)?
4) With the availability of RJ100s, who would fly them? How would you respond to management’s argument that, due to the common type rating with aircraft already flown by DCI and increased costs, the aircraft could not be flown at mainline?
5) What do you think of flow back agreements?
6) What is your position on seniority list integration with DCI carriers?

CONTRACT
1) What are your goals? Be specific.
2) Do you believe we should have a “cost neutral” mentality with regards to any changes/improvements made to our contract?
3) What are your thoughts on pilot negotiations impacting other employee costs?

COMMUNICATION
1) What is your assessment of current MEC Communications?
2) What would you do differently, if anything?
3) What are your thoughts on management’s use of the media and public opinion against us, and do you believe we should respond and hold them accountable in public when they do this?
4) Do you believe public relations could and/or should play a role in achieving our goals?
5) What are your thoughts on management’s use of the other employees against us during contract negotiations? How can we counter this effectively?

PROFESSION
1) Is cutting the value of an airline pilot’s career by HALF ultimately a safety issue? Why do you think ALPA has not publicly made a big deal of this?
2) What responsibility does ALPA have with regards to safety?
3) Does the public care about safety, or are they only interested in the lowest priced ticket? What are your ideas to address this issue?

PILOT COSTS
1) What effect do pilot costs have on the success or failure of an airline? Specifically, what effect do pilot costs have on Delta Air Lines?

RESTORATION
1) What will “restoration” of our profession look like? How long should it take? What kind of strategy can we use to achieve this in the most effective and expeditious manner?
2) Would you be willing to work with other pilot unions (i.e. APA, USAPA, SWAPA, etc.) using a common strategy to achieve restoration of our profession?

DALPA’S OBJECTIVES
1) If you were tasked with writing DALPA’s Mission Statement, what would you write?

TRACK RECORD
1) How did you vote on LOA’s 46 and 51, and why?

OVERALL
1) How do you feel about your chosen career as a Delta pilot?

LD is part of the establishment, can't deny that.

I hardly call this getting hit back, or crying like babies. More the other side crying about a questionaire coming out. If this is the way the newbies will run it, I'm all for it. I call it as a see it.

Alpha - clearly everyone who wished to participate did, including those with contrasting viewpoints. Not that there is a whole lot of contrast. I'll pony up the $75 if whoever feels slighted wishes to expose their version of "I'm for restoration, higher pay and scope" wants to publish. The only caveat being that they have to write down how they would have voted on the Compass recommendation and why. That seems to be a pretty clear litmus test on how Candidates feel about representation and it clearly differentiates the group. (regardless of which side of the issue - it does make a stark contrast in how someone looks at representation and scope)

I like the questions that deal with recent votes. That form of vetting does help differentiate the Candidates.

Thank God no one was on taxiway M when a 76 came barreling down it. Seriously.

I'd rather you not bring issues to this thread that got the other thread shut down. Move along, nothing to see here.

Everyone else - anybody else thinking APC is getting a little too Flightinfo'ish? We could migrate back to the ALPA boards and give Buzz some work

I agree. I also wonder if/how these mishaps/incidents might affect the SOC. Can't imagine the feds are too enamored with Delta/NWA right now.
