Good link over on the Regional board " A sign of the times" thread on CNN interviewing RA and DL being named "Airline of the year". He mentions "up- gauging" the airline and bringing RJ flying back to mainline.

I don't know how to copy the link over to this thread..but worth listening to (notwithstanding ATL IROPS this weekend!)

Dear Captain Crabbypants,

Last night you were a total a$$hat to the lady manning the gatekeeper frequency. Grow up. You were flight #149*. I hope you enjoy your meeting with ALPA and your chief pilot. It sucks when we have to apologize for the horrible behavior exhibited by some within our ranks. You are not the center of the universe.

I just looked up your name. Wow. I'm sure Pooh Bear's human friend was appalled.

Your CEO chooses his words carefully. When he talks about reducing RJ flying, he only mentions 50 seaters. I have heard him before describe all the 2-class RJs (CR7s and up) as "big planes". He considers them and wants customers to consider them as "mainline airplanes". Pax equally hate flying these bigger RJ's on 3 hr flights as well and then being crammed in a hot/cold jetway waiting for their carry-on bags. While parking the 50 seaters is a step in the right direction from a customer service standpoint, I don't think it means an end to outsourcing unfortunately. 88 717s doesn't equal an end to 225 CR7, CR9 and E170/175 aircraft.

Why are we so bad at IROPS? Of the three airlines I have worked for, we are by far the worst at handling IROPS.

I decided to catch a flight that left right when my reserve started as it was first flight of morning. I was scheduled to arrive an hour into my reserve period. Scheduling actually called me as I was boarding with a how soon can you get there call. I told them the truth. Said an hour and told them what flight I was on. They gave trip to someone else and gave me an unavailable. I commuted in anyway and the flight actually arrived 45 minutes into my reserve. I was in the chief pilots office 5 minutes later (50 minutes into my short call). Figured the chief pilots would agree with me and remove the unavailable. I was wrong. I was heavily scolded and told to never do that again. I made point that if I was driving, I would have arrived even later. They didn't care. They said driving is more reliable than flying. I lost all faith in the chief pilot office that day. Now I avoid it at all cost.

Haven't been on reserve for quite a while but I used to use the 2 hours to commute in rule all the time and never had any problem using my flight to my base (was LAS-SLC at the time). Was always there on time and never thought that I could be in trouble for it as it was an accepted principle. Of course, the DAL rules may have been different than NWA rules at those times.

I think they may need a slimmer bracket for that airplane at least. I think MS committed to supporting RT for longer than the expected service life of the tablet so I don't think we will be left with a brick.

Actually, it looks like MS may be merging RT into Windows Phone (or vice versa depending on your perspective). RT has similar hardware to Windows Phone so it would probably work quite well and for casual use (non work related) it would open the tablet to 300,000 phone apps. It would also probably extend/improve the support for the tablet. If you are interested in additional info probably the best web site for this is Windows Phone Central (WPCentral.com).

Bid question for a new guy. I'm right on the edge of a regular vs a reserve line. When I brought up PBS I saw my name listed on the main page (never a good thing...) with reference to the following in the PWA: 23.D.10.b. Which states:

10. A pilot who cannot be awarded a regular line within his LCW will be awarded a reserve line.
Exception: A pilot who is within a number (such number to be the projected number of regular lines in such pilot’s category) of the most senior pilots in a category and who cannot be awarded a regular line within his LCW may:
a. request and be awarded an RLL.
b. elect to be awarded a blank regular line if he does not request an RLL.

I'm listed as the b category. So I'm guessing that I bid a regular line and if they can't get me a line that fits in the LCW I can just go rouge and just pick up white slips in open time and on the swap board?

If so it leads me to my next question...how do I elect to do this? I looked around on PBS and don't see an option there. I'm all about time off and quality of life right now, so having an open schedule would be quite nice.

Any input or insight would be appreciated.

Maybe I misread this part of the contract but I thought if you put in the request for an RLL (Reduced Lower Limit) in your bid and you can't be awarded a regular line within the LCW then they will give you what you could get and have the option to just either white slip to pick up more or be awarded enough reserve days to make up the difference to reach the reserve guarantee. And I think the RLL is pretty low in most cases so your bid could end up with some pretty low numbers. Anyone smarter than me on the contract can confirm or deny this interpretation :).
