I would prefer a base. IF IF IF, they do this. It would probably allow a few really junior guys to bid the A position!

At CAL the guys living in Guam get some sort of COLA. I think it was like $1500/mo and you were bumped up one year on the pay scale, can't quite remember the specifics, but I think that was it. They also had all there stuff moved over and back when they bid in and out of the base even if it was not a mandatory displacement. If we could get that, there might be alot of senior fellas that would go over and try it out. I think it would be very difficult to run a 10 aircraft operation without basing guys there.

At CAL the Guam base is a love/hate relationship. Flying is great, I think they had/have 13 738's, 180 min ETOPs. Medical, schools etc are very bad.
If you go there you get $1200/month housing allowance which is barely enough for a 2 room apt.
If you get it as a new hire FO - you will be paid the second year pay off the bat for large NB (738) - $62/hour - I think.
No paid move if you are a new hire or take it voluntarily.

The prices are fairly high. It is known as Japanese cheep Hawaii. Lots of honeymooners. All or most FA's are jap speakers.

Some guys like island life, some commute from Manila where they live like kings, some just hide from US laws (read - alimony), some can't stand it after a few months.

I am surprised they are downsizing it. It was one of the best performing hubs in their system. There were some years when it was the only moneymaker. The fairs stayed high.

Either way with Delta's strength in NRT it makes total sense to pick up Guam's traffic.
Let's hope it will materialize.

Do the CAL pilots get positive space passes to get back and forth to GUM if they commute? Or, do they just not commute?

Really? I could use a tutor, but I was hoping for a 20 year old tennis player that could also supplement my "retirement" :D
