There is definitely good and bad with Guam. I was never there when I was single but the single Navy guys in my previous squadron said Guam stood for:
Give Up And Masterbxxx.

I was stuck there once with a broken aircraft for 4 days and I thought I was in a pokemon cartoon come to life - it is definitely a Japenese tourist mecca and also very costly - but if it brings jobs to the Big D, I am all for it. :)

I was based there when GUM opened as a 3-holer base for NW. It was a 3 month gig and we got PS passes to commute with AND we got int'l per diem, 24 hours a day for 3 straight months whether we were in base or at home. The guys that replaced us were permanently based there and some guys moved out there and some commuted. SPN was a popular choice for some of the movers. We navigated with Omega. When you first get there, it takes a little time to acclimate to just how far from home you are. After you've been there for a while, things tend to change and it turns out it's a pretty nice place to live...for a while... We got a local drivers license and that helped some with the high prices (locals discount). We also figured out where the locals ate and drank and we got adopted by some serious fun lovers. It turns out that they've got a pretty busy social scene. It CAN be a fun place, for a while...

I've been through there many times (in one instance ONE time too many) and its not a bad destination...just wouldn't want to have to live there. If DAL will DH guys in for their trips, I could see that. If not, with a family of younger kids, pass. Think of it as the Hawaii that the Japanese who can't afford Hawaii go to. Hopping social scene, casinos, etc, decent food, but it "Guams" every day at about 3:00 PM. A gentle rain that passes thru and makes everything smell like, well, Guam. Or Orlando, for my DAL brothers who frequent that gig with me.

I was stationed there for 2 yrs in the Navy. Actually it stands for Give Us American Money. The Traditional Chamarro greeting of Hafa' Adai can be translated into half-a-day, which describes the pace of life and local work ethic, which given the heat and humidity is not surprising.

Plan on getting the "crud" for a month or two when you first get there until the flora and fauna in your GI catch up, but the plus is you can then eat with impunity in places like the PI and Egypt and not get sick

The flying around the islands is a hoot - GUM will usually be your alternate, comms are HF and uncontrolled ops with a lot of use of cruise clearances.
If layovers are at any of the out islands it's like another world. Makes SPN look like Manhattan.

Hopefully it will include the beach market to NRT as well and it would be a sweet deal, especially if its PS from a CONUS domicile, but to actually move and live out there - if you are unencumbered and adventurous - maybe. It would be the definition of commute from hell. Think of it as a disassociated overseas assignment.

They are pretty good about being around for scheduled service at the out islands, but if you were mil there were times we waited all day for a fueler to show up, despite PPR and coordination, and then they might be topless local woman in grass skirts chewing Betelnut (Yap). On some of the islands we got smart and had the coordinates of the airport manager and would circle his house a few times and got in the habit of bringing fresh San Miguel from Cubi and then the service improved immensely. :D

Best thing to do there IMO is get off island and Scuba dive. If you are partial to efficiency and organization you'll go crazy. Would be a big help to be retired or Reserve mil and have access to those facilities.

That stuff is like battery acid. yuck. I DO like the number 6 though. It's a porter style. Not as good as porters you would get in Germany or Brussels, but still not too bad.
