This could have an undesired response the company is not anticipating with more training. I would consider changing equipment if needed to avoid these trips for the necessary seniority (downbid). If still unable to avoid 5 days, bid up for pay because QOL sucks either way.

As a South guy, I tend to agree. For family reasons I prefer three day or shorter trips. But...I have heard many, many times from N guys how great five day trips are, and they wish we had more.

One man's trash is another's treasure, etc.

The airline is now made up of a large percentage of commuters, individuals bidding off equipment to avoid the 5 days would probably be a small group and would not adversely make a difference in training costs. Additionally not sure what cat you could bid to that won't have some 5 days.
Read Dawgs last sentence.

"Open time" in domestic categories tells a different story...
The few commutable 5 day trips go senior. Most go to guys who don't want them.

Delta never built 5 day domestic trips. After the merger with NW they were going to quit building them. They were a NW thing I suspect because they had more long distance commuters. There was a big back lash and the company agreed to continue building them.

I bid 5 day trips to limit my exposure to a commute that has gone from mostly Mainline to mostly 50 seat RJ s. Id love to fly shorter trips but it adds more commutes. If we had some mainline jets to commute on Id probably bid shorter trips.

Chalk me up as one who prefers 5 day trips. I hate the drive through Manhattan to get to LaGuardia and want as few trips as possible. I'll even take the non - commutable ones. I've got two of them this month plus one week of vacation, and I'm done.

Yep. I want to commute as seldom as possible. I'd do 12-day trips if I could.

NWA use to have 9 day trips on the 744 worth about 75 hrs. You could do one the first nine days of one month and the last nine days of the next and have 6 weeks off in between. It was sweet

International is totally different. Domestic 5-days are fatiguing. Short layovers, lots of legs, not fun.

I get why commuters want them, but watch trip coverage on the 320. More than half of them go to junior guys who live in base and don't want them, or reserves.

I received my EFB surface device….after spending most of the afternoon "learning" how to use this, I've come to a couple of conclusions. (1) tell me again how much distant learning $ we're getting in order to learn how to use this device, and (2)The DC-9 is really looking like a queen (at least in my rear view mirror.) BTW, I've been a Mac guy for well over 10 years.
Rant over.
