I tried to explain how this was a 737 problem as Southwest and American have a solution to this problem. The solution that we are banned from using.

I then called the 737 Fleet Manager and spoke with him. He stated that they had just finished a noise study and it was inclusive. He was disappointed but was continuing to fight this problem. He told me that if nothing changed in the next few months I should write another FCR. But not on every flight.

If we don't complain and write it up it's not going to get fixed.
FYI, on the android and itunes markets there is an app called "smart tools." Included is a soundmeter. The android version maxes out at 85db, not sure about the apple version. I compared it against a scientific quality meter and it was very accurate.

A quiet 757 or 767 seem to be in the 75db range. A loud one can easily hit 85db.

Or the company could put in LCD screens and eliminate all the cooling fans..

Meant to say the test results were inconclusive.

Could just rivet some VG to the nose like the 900's. It helps.

Flying at .76 makes it more quiet too. Just saying.

In the meantime, more FCR's would help establish a perceived problem. Apparently there are solutions, like vortex generators and intercom systems.

I jumpseated on a UAL 737-800 yesterday. I knew about the noise problem here on our 737's. I was surprised how quiet theirs was. As quiet as a 75/76 (my equipment). I stood up mid flight and looked at their nose and wiper blades the best I could from the end of the center console. While they didn't have any fancy covers on their wiper blades, they did have VG's on the top of the nose, right in front of the windshield. In my opinion, their cockpit was as quiet as a 76 at 390. I was amazed. To be honest, I was thinking, what are our guys whining about...until this comment about VG's.

Must be the VG's

Edit: just re-read my post and realized that last comment might have sounded jerkish. I've been on our 737's and they are loud. The VG's seem to work and they can't cost too much.

I remember my days as a 727 engineer, I'd get to the hotel and collapse in the bed, completely exhausted. Then, after getting checked out on the MD-88, I felt much better after a day of work. The noise alone causes a ton of fatigue.

These guys are great. I was unsure of my size so I called them. He told me to send him a measurement and they custom made a hat to fit me. Very good quality hats, too. Plus, they're comfortable!

I second. By far the best hat I've owned. I wasn't aware they made custom sizes though... good to know!

What are you willing to give up for that? Kind of reminds me of the rest facilities and how the issues cumulate into leverage. Much often, the pilots losing something valuable to get something of safety necessity.

I'm not willing to give up anything for it, nor am I suggesting we should trade anything away for just accepting it. This has absolutely nothing to do with Section 6. This isn't a want, it's a necessity, and precedent doesn't excuse it. Other airlines get it, and I think this is time for some smart Project guy or an ALPA guy that want to make a name for themselves to steve up and solve this.
