You only got paid for touching trips on the primary and secondary vacation. Some of what's being posted is a bit of a myth. Trips were generally 3 days long back then. As we graduated to longer and longer trips they capped the trips touching pay to a limited number of days outside the actual vacation footprint.
It was a very senior oriented system. As a junior bidder it was quite possible to get a line where no trip fell within your vacation or touched it and the vacation week became valueless.
You're also correct on the bidding. The summer weeks were gone in round one.
Our current system is fine and more fair across the seniority range. We just need more value per week and for vacation to be pay and credit.

If you were senior enough, you could do it. I used to boat-sit on one guy's boat for him when he had to fly his one 4 day trip a month. That's why some guys would stay on the 727 forever, rather than upgrade and be junior. If you were senior you picked the lines with two 4 day trips that touched your 1 week of vacation. Oh, and there might have been some 'recreational sick leave' used in there too.

A lot of guys in BOS didn't bid all the summer months in the first round, many of them were more into skiing, and would bid the Christmas, Jan and Feb weeks for their ski vacations. Remember, summer up there is only 3 months long. If you were a boater, you bid summer, if you were a skier, you bid winter vacations. As an 18 month F/E I got a week in June for my wedding. I did have to fly Christmas and Thanksgiving though. Those weeks went just as high as a June or August vacation week.

Timbo's description isn't mythical, it was reality. Our current system needs a lot of juice to make it fine.

Quick question regarding vacation after Upgrade conversion.....

I'm upgrading in Sept and have a week of vacation in January 2017. I'd rather get rid of it and pick another week to avoid getting paid for it at FO pay. Do I simply go into ICrew and drop it? Or, is there any particular number I should call?

I must be missing something, you upgrade in September and become a Captain. The vacation is in January, after your upgrade, you get Captain pay for the vacation. It doesn't matter if you were an FO when you bid it.

I wouldn't say it was valueless. You got the value of the vacation bank for that week on top of your 75 hour-ish schedule and, as I seem to recall, the vacation day was a bit more lucrative than today's 3+15/day pay out. Ergo, you were getting about 100 hours of pay for working a full month with vacation whereas the current PBS system with high ALVs sets you up for 85-87 hours of pay and still working pretty much a full month.

Thanks, yes thats correct I spoke to Crew Resources. For some reason I thought that if you kept a vacation that was bid as an FO, it either had to be liquidated and rebid, or kept but paid at FO rate.

Thanks.

NASA please explain how you are a 29 year old MIT grad that sucks at sentence construction, got hired at the regionals in the 90's (when you were 15), and somehow forgot to include your A380 and E190 time in your post on the UAL hired thread? You must have felt that those were not important to share with the others on that thread I'm sure.. You have no credibility here.

He said he was a UAL hire... but he didn't specify the job.

I think you can get do this with 0 TPIC:
