Now. What's all this suff about a cost index? Does it have something to do with our crew discounts at the airport? :D

FYI- on the 76/75 it's accepted technique to just manually input .78/300 on the descent page.

That approximates the CI 55ish without the annoyance of updating it within the window on descent.

I always do that unless flying into some podunk airport.

On redeyes, for some reason it overrides to .82/340. My fingers just cant help it...:D

It has to do with us getting ZERO discounts at ATL.

Sometimes, you just wanna choke a b--.

There's this thing called fuel savings ... and if you are early or going to be on time, there's no need to go fast and as such, you aren't planned to go fast.

My two cents.

Well most folks fly what the dispatcher plans......but often I keep the speed up until 12-15 miles final at the latest then slow and configure.

Oh... sorry. Your post made it sound like guys were doing it coming into ATL. I do it because...

a) I was taught that way by all four of my LCA's on both my 73 and -88 OE's.

and

b) That's what the company/dispatcher has put on the flight plan.

Follow the CI on the HOWGOZIT. Plain and simple. It is annotated right before TOD. If ATC wants something else as most places with SIDS and STARS do, then do it.
If you are going in to MCI and FSD at 0100, then just let the thing do what it was planned to do. A initial CI descent will save about 200-500lbs of fuel.

New, if you want the Proprietors of the Atlanta airport to give you a discount, you must PURCHASE a discount card by donating to the ATL Airport interfaith Chapel. The 2010 cards should be out shortly.
