I think the iPad would be a great EFB, but good luck getting the FAA to sign off on it.

Any JFK Commuter... Can anyone please PM with a suggestion for a hotel at JFK? I'm looking for a decent price, but also a minimum of fuss on transportation for a (very) late arival.
My apologies for using the thread for this purpose... Thanks. |

I'm waiting for you to say that she's got a "great personality". We all know what that's code for.
Dude; My fellow pilots would thank me if she got hired. A "long ball hitter" Name the book. |

Jeppesen Ipad App There are some issues with using something like an I-pad for a efb. It could be a good document carrier, but not an efb. Problem is that it is cheaper for you to do airside docs than to spend 500 bucks per pilot for an i-pad. |

Pilot Frog, I agree that using a I-pad or Kindle Reader for your document carry requirements would be a nice plus, but it would be your dollar and your option.
The FAA wants a EFB that can be updated at all times from on board or internal GPS. The I-pad cannot do that due to FCC radio requirements. It also lacks the ability for the 10-9 to show the moving map and ppos. To add to this, docking on the windows that are used for egress will cause issues as well. It is not as simple as many think. The good thing is that it will save money and increase flexibility for our airline and our pilots. That makes it a priority that is always getting attention. Once we get a EFB or decent Shipsets it allows some impressive flexibility in regards to crew basing and movement. One of the biggest hurdles that pilot face in regard satellite basing is the jep revision cycle. Take care of that issue and many opportunities open up! ;) |

I will say it AGAIN. Satellite basing is BAD for pilot staffing unless there are some very strict limitations that the company will NOT agree to in an LOA or PWA. |

I am not arguing that fact. Everything needs to come with some min level of protection, we all know that. Many want more bases, the EFB is one of the major hurdles to that. If we are worried about efficiencies, those five day trips probably save the company on staffing required as well. |
