They can opt to surplus positions like they did two and three bids ago without shutting a category down. In effect reducing staffing in a jet where you end up with displacements off a seat.

The company can add more seats on an AE than are on the bid. They cannot displace more though.

I do beleive that the guidance going forward for our economy is mixed. There is a possible of some softening demand, but if that does not occur they will need bodies.

I say wait and see what the delay is for.

99 times out of 100, it is because there was some misinformation or misunderstanding out amongst the pilots. Probably some chief pilot(s) called in and said "Hey my guys are confused about this." They delay the bid to get more info out to ensure that everyone gets to "bid what they want and want what they bid." Mostly, the black helicopter theories are all wrong. If they were going to make any substantive changes going forward, they would pull the bid and issue another one, they have that right.

+1

Yes, its true. Buzz and I agree on something.

For all you young folk (ACL) an 8086 was a computer chip whose first generation was derived to run a drill press. You may know it's younger offspring as the Gazillion Core Intel. I think I could fly the bid request to Japan on a 12 day trip, leave them with an elderly Japanese lady with an abacus, fly back with the results, faster than Delta's super "Tiger Direct" clearance compute used to process these bids.

Actually, I'll one up you by saying I have had computers that ran the 8088 and CP/M and MS-DOS 2.0 (wasn't ready to trust 1.0). The 8086 was a full 16 bit version of the 8088. Also, it ran at 5 Mhz (5000 hz) with 64K (64,000 bytes of ram) and two 5.25" floppy disks. Just thought I'd date myself a little.

I love you man! A guy that can talk real computing.

On another note. Here's the downside of flying international: It is 1am and I'm brewing beer. Yea I know, you guys are saying "I can't believe Bigdaddie drinks beer!" I've got a Hefe and Pale Ale flowing on tap and now I'm making a Light Pils (Ala Miller Light) for the rest of the summer days (it is still in the 90s in central Cal). Next on the list is a Stout for winter. This is the best hobby ever. Hold on, time to add more hops.

Anyone know Freddie in NRT (hotel sports bartender)? Paging greens keeper Carl. Carl, hey Carl. I want to make sure he didn't get fired after we had a few on my last 67hr layover.

Cheers,
BD

Quite true. That does happen from time to time. Either way, I got my AE and MD prefs in.

Again why? There is a reason for it.

You are rolling your eyes... but I think Frog's point is somewhat valid. Why is it that the aforementioned fNWA bases were rolled over without a rebid while the SLC base is a COMPLETE rebid? Because there is some mythical international flying that might now/someday originate in SLC????? This seems to me to be a goose/gander case if I ever saw one. Why should the one way check valve only work when adding domestic time to an international category and not the other way around? As someone pointed out (was it Frog?) Give 'em a TOE.. and call it good. I'll be happy to go to SLC on TDY and fly TOEs there. :) But.... I SMELL CONCESSION HERE..... A bunch of dudes in SLC are fixing to get boned, in order to streamline something which does not yet exist. It's wrong.

Spin it any way you like.

I don't see why you feel this is wrong. The two NWA bases on the 757 did some international flying. They were flying both transoceanic and the Narita flying. The transition agreement was that they would be 7ER bases. Had they been brought over as 767 bases they would not have been allowed to fly trips they had flown pre merger. That was the proper way to handle those bases.
