2X pay - which happens to be 17.5 hours on the way back from Johannesburg (!) ...and they don't even have a union, that's volunteered from the company... As Scooby would say - Aarroohh!?!?

Not sure about how to improve commuting either, but one "quick fix" would be to give commuters unlimited priority passes for commuting between their official domicile and home for work only. And/or a listing window (24-48 hours maybe?) in advance that would guarantee priority.

Not sure what the feds could do. They could never in their wildest dreams force you to live somewhere (or even define what that means) but they could force tracking of all flights as duty time. But what about the pretend "locals" who drive 2-3 or more hours? How is that "rest"? Shouldn't we have cameras in our homes 24/7 live streaming to the FAA to make sure we're well rested and not stressed? Worst case we take a hit and have to commute up a day earlier a lot of the time. Best case we get a "netjets" style "pick a city and we PS you where we need you" system. Or somewhere in between.

I agree with your statements on reserves. The fantasy days of never doing anything ever are over. Not because the company won't give us that anymore, but because most of us are no longer willing to subsidize micro-niche kingdoms like that anymore because they are insanely expensive and the over all group gets little to nothing out of it.

If the past two years is any reference, you shouldn't be surprised at what our government can and will do. They've already said that they don't like commuting. All anyone has to do is look at the commercial drivers situation that they've implemented. Drivers have to get tested for sleep apnea. They have higher physical standards than they used to. And currently, they want to reduce their daily hours that they can drive to 8. That's a potential 27% drop in available working hours per day.

So don't assume that the government can't come in and screw everything up. They always do.

Why would the company give us contractual improvements and stock in order to complete the merger? Neither the DAL or NWA contract prevented them from completing the merger and never talking to us? The answer is that it was in their financial interest to do it. Our contract can be changed through mutual consent at any time, the amendable date is just a marker for the Railway Labor Act and what actions the NMB can take to facilitate a deal, there is no impediment to making contractual gains before that date.

The key will be to, once again, convince the company it is in their best interests to complete a deal quickly. Happy pilots make for a happy company that makes money, unhappy pilots, not so much. I am not saying that it will happen or even if the MEC will decide they want to do that. That is their choice.

Oh, if I haven't mentioned it lately, the gains we made in the merger were the first time ever this happened in the history of aviation. Just wanted to make Carl's head spin around again.

Yep, it's FUBAR for me too, says my account is revoked. This is unacceptable; I pay $50 a year for this and I couldn't list for a flight in the morning if I wanted to, or even check loads.

Numerous memos are out stating it is going down intermittently due to high demands on the system. (might be more down than up)

When everyone no longer needs it (and demands decrease) it will start working again.
