DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD
Doug Steenland to forgo Board reelection
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
February 15, 2011
Delta Board member Doug Steenland has notified Delta’s Board of Directors that he will not stand for reelection at the company’s 2011 annual meeting of stockholders because the integration of Delta and Northwest is largely complete and the merger between the two airlines has achieved positive results.
In a note to Board Chairman Dan Carp, Doug explained it is an appropriate time for him to rotate off the board given the strategic success of the merger.
“The merger has secured a bright future for the merged carrier's shareholders, the communities it serves and its employees,” Doug said.
Each year, Delta’s Corporate Governance Committee formally reviews each director’s continuation on the board and allows each director the opportunity to confirm his or her desire to continue as a member of the board. Doug joined Delta’s board of directors in October 2008 and has chosen to forgo reelection this year.
“I wish the best to you and my fellow Board members, the management team and Delta’s employees,” Doug said.

I really want to be a glass half full guy, but when I read a press release like this, what I actually read is that Steenland will go away for an appropriate amount of time and then re-appear as our new CEO when RA goes away to pursue other opportunities.

We don't have the bargaining leverage to pull off longevity based pay. Our lack of unity exposes us to alter ego replacement by non Delta pilots. If we increased the economic incentives to outsource small narrow body jets, the result would be more outsourcing.
I'm not opposed to longevity based pay, but without scope all it would do is encourage management to continue the destruction of longevity by alter ego replacement of Delta pilots. A more logical approach at this juncture is to follow traditional models of compensation based on responsibility and capability.

On the other hand, it makes me wonder why a guy like this gets off the gravy train. One scenario: he's going to go sit out his non-compete and reappear as someone else's CEO. If I want to get even more conspirational, I'd expect him to reappear as CEO of an airline we would be likely to merge with, and about 5 months thereafter where he would announce his intention to retire at the helm, "unforeseen circumstances" would force his hand to reluctantly accept a merger offer from DAL.
I've been told I'm a glass half-empty guy that can't think outside the box, but I don't follow your logic. Why would he have to leave the board to get the CEO spot?

Ok you are a glass half empty like me on this guy, but you are definitely thinking outside the box. I think your version of potential reality is more creative and likely than mine.

Man did I mess up biding. I guess I didn't quite understand the Clear Schedule and Start next option. Ended up with a terrible RES schedule.
