What I heard was that it made total sense to go to the i-pad, to the point that they could do a trade in/new one every year, pre loaded and still save money. However, there would be a perception within the non union ranks that the pilots were getting a good deal and apparently some in upper management have a problem with that, so the word is, "No i-pads."

They would rather waste money than be seen giving the pilots a deal.

Sad....but, that being said, give me the SWA 737 pay rate and I'll buy my owned damned Ipad.

I bet as all the other airlines show "savings" in this era of saving every dime, then the company will reverse it's position. Seriously, switching just makes sense...holding out until you're the last one shows a resistance to change, to process improvement, and especially to a commitment to information technology.

Default reserve short call question

Just have a short call question - I've looked all over the PWA with no luck, would anyone happen to know how to find the reserve availability period times for a pilot on short call? I am new to the DAL reserve system and have short call from 1900Jun16 - 1900Jun17... I am assuming one can't be available 24 hours straight with no rest, right? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. thx

First they are recommended only and do not really have to follow them.

They are on the Pilot Resources and Scheduling page. Left side about half of the way down. Listed by month, then by category.

There are currently no limits on "Flag Dispatched flights" wrt to SC. See SC is not duty for Flag Operated flights because the Whitlow letter only discusses domestic operations, and only limits Domestic Dispatched flights, not Flag Dispatched flights. So yes, your SC is legal, and yes, they can call you at 1700 on the 17th for a 13 day Asia trip, and as long as you have days available, you are legal to go.

International categories have 24 hour short call. (which sucks sucks sucks)

It's legal.... whitlow doesn't apply to international operations.

I think my favorite is the EMB 170 pilot vs the 747 pilot. Reason for becoming a pilot? "HELL YEAH!"
That sounds hauntingly familiar to I believe I said when I signed up for the Air Force back in the day. Didn't have a frikkin clue what I was doing.

Short call pilots often have Whitlow restrictions. Some have 24 and 7 issues depending on the trip. Crew scheds makes mistakes and in the last two years has been making a lot more mistakes but most of the time they are correct.
There were several trips this week that went out on GS to guys junior to me. I was sure I should have been given the trips. I always plug them into the legality tool on DBMS and was surprised to find in every case I had a legality issue even though I was sure I was good to go. I suspect that is what is happening with the short call pilots mentioned.

Whitlow doesnt apply to int'l. Also, on the 777 if a greenslip goes out with someone on shortcall - its usually a safe bet the sc pilot is legal for the trip unless it would fly him into golden days or mil leave.

When I said ...Ok, it wasnt a question, it was a thing that makes me go huh.
