In fact, I say that to myself on the 12th every month, to ensure I get another reserve line, fly Th-Su, with a 30 hour Williamsburg layover. :(

That PHF layover is one of the worst in the system. I too have wondered why we pass up a nice, close mall area with tons of eating options and drive 30 minutes away to put us basically in the middle of nowhere with practically no eating options.

I wish I had a trip to PHF recently to just write it up.
The funny thing is, Williamsburg doesn't have a downtown. Hasn't had one since the early 19th century. It was in decline until the 1920s when Rockefeller put his weight behind restoring it. But it's better than downtown Newport News or Hampton, neither are good safe options. The nicest area relatively speaking is next to the airport. Just google map phf and ask for mall or food, do the same for williamsburg and it ain't pretty. And the downtown idea can be a really bad one too, double edged sword. NYC, gooood. DCA? Great. IND? Awesome. DAY? not so good. Even the locals know it sucks. Hotel staff, "Unless you have a car, you're pretty much screwed." "I wouldn't recommend eating at Yorkshire Steak and Seafood." Pancake restaurant owner as I walked in, "Ah, you must be a MD-88 pilot?" "Nobody walks this far to get here except you guys." The Captain and I wrote the place up. But here's the kicker ... I sent an email to the ALPA Hotel Committee Representative. And after waiting 2 months for a response, he replied to my email and acknowledged that they were scouting for a new hotel. But seeing that we're still staying way out in Williamsburg ****es me off when you have much better hotel choices with food options and a mall in Newport News. I can layover in Compton as long as I only have to walk across the street to get to good places to eat or a store to buy something I need. |

I had a couple of PHF trips and when I was a CVGM88FO. Without a doubt, the worst layover ever. 30 minute drive to hotel and the hotel is on the southern outskirts of Williamsburg so you're not close to anything. Hotel: Cigarette holes in the linen, torn and dirty upholstry on the furniture, closet doors dangling/stacked up against the wall, trim and molding falling down, boogers and ink marks on the walls, and worse, there was mold growing on the walls and ceiling. They also didn't have any luggage racks to help prevent the spread of bedbugs to your luggage. (The Capts room was in similar shape). Food? What food? The food in the hotel restaurant was disgusting and there's only a gas station, a steakhouse with very limited hours, a pancake place, and a fast food option (Long John Silvers?).

Nu KC10's description is perfect - the place is a dump and on par with our old JAN layover (without all the gunplay). |
