NWA had ordered the 787 as a hedge against Japan "open skies" making Narita economically obsolete. They learned from Delta management's experience when the 1996 German open skies killed Frankfurt in 1997. The hubs were quite similar...slot and environmental controlled, using just over 300 slots per week and served from 9 US origin markets with 17 beyond destinations. Japan "open skies" really aren't, but there is room for only two alliance partners there. All Nipon is with Star, and JAL is with oneworld. As long as Haneda access is somewhat restricted NRT will do OK. If Haneda ever truly opens and Delta doesn't get a significant slot and gate portfolio, NRT will be like LHR vs LGW. It will become the discount and secondary destination airport.
1) How many of those DAL aircraft on order are slated to replace airframes currently on the property?
2) DCI is 100 aircraft smaller....what was the change of gauge of the DCI makeup? How many of the smaller 50 seat RJs, which do not directly replace mainline flying, left the DCI property, in exchange for 70-76 seat airframes arriving, which DO replace mainline flying?
It's great if 200 50 seaters left the DCI property. Whats not so great is when they are replaced by 100 76 seat aircraft that parks 100 aircraft at the mainline.

As always, Slow's press releases are only part of the truth:

Agreed and thanks, though to be an apples to apples comparison we would have to go back to 2000 when the change beagn. To get the post merger "big picture" would we need to include Air France / KLM, Mexicana (since the investment), GOL and Alaska in the mix?
What is your thought on "Outsourcing is an abrogation of seniority" ?
I am aware of Delta's orders and thankful for them. Would be nice if we had 787's to replace the 757's instead of 737's and MD90's. Anyone know how NWA had intended to deploy the 787-8? Just curious.

sure the 739s will be coming in soon but they'll be replacing airplanes already charted here.
When are we just going to order these things...
Those C Series are nice looking airplanes. I'm a little concerned that some of our brethren will not be interested in flying them because it doesn't say Boeing or Airbus on it though. After the Compass give away I don't know what some of those more senior guys want
