Just a thought, with the continued hiring, GS's could be a temporary condition. Buying a house in the NE, not so much. (Delta Air Lines, the only constant is.... change.)

Good point(s), but don't you think it's safe to add another constant---NY will always been Jr?

I went to college out there, but the stretch of small towns along route 124, Chatham, Florham Park, Madison, Morristown has great schools, a college town feel, and 1 hour train to midtown. School districts are excellent. Worth the visit.

LOL, I put out the feeler for your house every 2-3 weeks but the wife just ain't biting :). We will never move to SLC as long as we're married. Too bad we don't have Denver!

Our situation is I hate commuting and told her I'm moving to a domicile, but since she followed me throughout my military career she can pick which one. She picked ATL which I'd prefer to avoid. My wife is from Texas so MSP, DTW, SLC, SEA, and NYC all get tossed in the trash due to the weather. However, my wife is no dummy and she sees all the green slips in NYC I miss due to my commute, so greed starts to fight with cold and maybe I've got a chance to avoid ATL. Just not sure if the cure is better than the disease :).

Just curious. Why are you trying to avoid ATL particularly if your wife picked it? If I was a new hire today, and decided to move to a base, ATL would be my first choice. The benefits of living there far out way being in NYC.

Live where you and especially your wife would be happy living. Besides, how many green slips would you have to get just to make up for the cost of living in NYC? You could buy a house for half that price down south. Never base you life on green slips because they might not always be there.

Don't plan on GS bonanza during the winter. Moving to the cold and then watching the GS spigot turn off would be too depressing for me.

GS's are transient. They evolve and change constantly with the ever shifting marketing winds. In the long term Atlanta will be the better place to be. From your description your wife will never be happy in NY. In ATL you will also have the advantage of training at home. That makes switching equipment far less painful. Atl will go far more junior with the arrival of the A321 and being the current front runner for the A350. There are plenty of GS's in ATL. Don't overthink things.

After 911, I lived farther north. Look at Poughkeepsie, Lagrangeville, Rheinbeck. Beautiful countryside, lots of space, awful winters, and don't get me started on the taxes. But, I could drive to all 3 airports and sit reserve when I wanted. I didn't have kids, but the schools were reputed to be good. All the GS I wanted, but we had guys out on furlough at the time, so I didn't take any of them. We moved to ATL as soon as we could.

Why not Detroit? Have you looked NW of DTW under "POLAR" and south of Flint? Rent a car and drive around Oakland County, you will be amazed. Michigan is not Detroit. If outdoors is your thing there is lots to offer North West of DTW.

You'll have to get (and do) a LOT of green slips to make up for the insane cost of living in the NYC domicile area. ATL is orders of magnitide cheaper to live and they get a lot of green slips too.
