When you get a fix it email it can be one of two reasons. 1) they have reviewed your app and noticed your missing a few items needed in order to get an intervew or 2) your app was screened and error was noticed so you get an email to fix it. If your scenario 1, then your one of the lucky ones but if your scenario 2, then you could be waiting quite some time until your application score reaches what they are looking for. You will not have any clue which of the two scenarios you fall into so that's why some get an invite right after they fix it and other have never heard a word since.

Once your app is looked at by one of the 4 screeners they will give it a score which then places it into one of 4 tiers for hiring. Updates or changes and job fairs will get your app pulled and looked at again but rarely does your score change. I was told once it's placed into a tier it will stay in that tier. You can move to the top of the tier with changes but ultimately once it's given a score it's not going to change.

I was given this information from one of the screeners as well as a guy that does the interviews.

You can only afford to take a big gamble at the beginning of your career because you will still have time to make up for it over time. Right now a big gamble might pay off big but if it doesn't you are pretty much at the same place you currently sit (regional FO).

It's really easy to get comfortable where you are and let your career happen. The big problem with letting your career happen is that most people are doing the same thing so your resume is also going to look like theirs. At that point, getting to a major is a crap shoot. A better approach is to do what you can to differentiate yourself from the pack.

I am not familiar with the TSA program so I can only give my opinion based on what you've written. That said, it sounds like a really good opportunity for a couple of reasons. 1) PIC time will differentiate you from people without PIC time, 2) small companies with big growth present opportunities not available at bigger companies; check airman, chief pilot, safety, ALPA chairman positions all differentiate you from people who don't have those things on their resume. Another thing I know about TSH is they don't make deals that are risky which means the 40 airplanes they agreed to take are pretty secure.

My suggestion to you is to put together a spreadsheet with estimated monthly salaries at your current company and TSA. Run different scenarios good and bad and figure out what the break even point is for each. If you have to commute factor that in too. In 2007 I figured it cost me $5,000 a year to commute including crash pad, car, and opportunity cost of open time. I bet your situation becomes a lot more clear when you cost/benefit it.

For what it's worth I left Comair for Compass in 2007. It sounds like a no-brainer now but at the time it wasn't a sure thing because of the flow down provision of Compass' contract. I was fortunate that I was able to flow to Delta but the move allowed me to be marketable at any major because of a few of the opportunities I mentioned above. As someone who has benefitted from a career gamble I lean toward going for it.

According to pilots who I spoke too, they only have about 50 pilots currently qualified to upgrade and they are getting about 40 airplanes this year with about a 350 pilot list. So they'd use you on reserve for both positions and when you hold a line, you could pick up open time for the left seat. Holding a full captain seat should occur in about 6 months due to the large amount of growth, but in the meantime you'd still get PIC time. Plus, first year pay would be $43 an hour instead of 23 and if you get stuck as an FO for some reason, second year pay is $53 an hour. However, if I stay where I am, my captain pay rate would be $10 an hour more, but it would be on reserve, where I'd be holding a line as TSA getting more then MMG. I'd also like to be an LCP , which I cannot due here until I upgrade.

So, its a tough call and I keep flip flopping. I do enjoy my super senior FO QOL currently. 3 weeks vacation, weekends and holidays off (until I upgrade), full vested 401K, comfortable with the airline and like the bidding system, to name a few things. Also, reserve time at my current airline would be much longer when I upgrade then it would be at TSA. With that new info, does that change what you think?
Definitely make the jump!

I have any opportunity to go get some PIC time at another regional immediately, well the job starts in Jan., if I get it. Should I give up almost 7 years seniority to chase PIC time at another regional if it looks like I should upgrade at my current regional in about 2 years? I'm still 300 away from upgrade and someone in mgmt told me that they are projecting to upgrade 100-150 next year. I think someone with 5 or 6,000 hours and 1,000 or more TPIC is more competitive and more likely to get an interview than someone with 6,000 hours, and the only PIC time is from instructing, which is less then 1,000 as well, not turbine. Also, would Delta look negatively at me for leaving my current regional to go to another to get PIC time? Would there be questions about my loyalty? Thoughts?

Wow--great gouge. Like you said, I won't know which category I fall under for the "fix it" email, but good info nonetheless. Thanks for posting.

I liked it when you were quiet. Can you stop posting until you are off probation?

Thank you.

Did something I wrote above offend you?

I'm off probation anyway so I guess I have your approval to post?

Yay for us! Can't wait to hear his wisdom once he's got 1 year under his belt. Glad I only have 20 years to go
