Absolutely NOT age discrimination just respect for elders. They have less time to work so they should be first. It would make more sense to put everyone in a computer randomizer than use SSN. Just glad to be here!!

I think it should be done by age as well. Its clearly not lawsuit material because many other places still do it that way and no one is getting sued. Its also the right thing to do for the reason you mentioned. But I don't see one second of negotiating time from either side being spent to even turn the contract to that page to see daylight.

I agree. I'm a 2001 hire and was the oldest guy in my class. I also had the highest last four so it wouldn't have mattered. It was the young guys who were upset about age. Sort of an age discrimination in reverse. I'm here so it doesn't affect me personally. Always struck me as odd, though, that the younger guys would claim "age discrimination."

I'd be quite happy to be the most junior in a newhire class at DL! Just hoping to interview in near future.

Sing along with me boys...........
These little town blues, are melting away.
I'll make a brand new start of it, in old New York.
If I can make it there,
I'll make it anywhere.
It's up to you, New York, New York.

Just to play devils advocate. So, all of you believe a guy who is 33 when hired should go ahead of the guy who is 32.5 because he has "less time" with the company.........ooooookay.....just sayin'

Your number has already been randomized, that's why they use SSN. It just doesn't seem "random" since you already know your number. I wouldn't be opposed to age determining seniority, but this is the fairest way to do it.

One other aspect is if I had been one more number senior, I would have been put on a different aircraft category, but was put on the "less desirable" airplane. Thought at the time it was a bummer, but that put me down a road of experiences and meeting individuals that I wouldn't trade anything for.
It is what it is, but no matter what someone is going to lose out. At least by age I knew that I would be employed longer than the other individuals at current property - if I so desired to stay there.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining about Delta's system and not trying to reinvent the wheel. I'm just giving perspective of an age based seniority system.
Question: is there any other airline that does it similar to Delta? I didn't know if others used last 4 ssn. Seems all the ones I've heard of use age.
