Most importantly make sure to have a beer and find some time to relax so you don't burn yourself out.
When I went through the only person who failed out was a guy who failed multiple tests, including one that was open book

Think maybe you're thinking of sims. Ground isn't bad. It's all about your partner in the sim. Get a bad one and you're in trouble. Come in after hours and use the trainers so your procedures are ironclad before sims. Dry run call-outs on your own time.
