This right here👆. Having an end goal in mind is great, but boom where you are planted.

There nothing wrong with hustling. A few years of hard work now could keep you on the front side of the hiring boom that is just now getting going.

That being said, while hours are important (PIC or not), it takes more than hours to make it to the majors. Networking, volunteering, and doing extra work (LOSA, Check Airman, Chief Pilot) are much more productive ways to make it out of the regionals than just flying a bunch and upgrading.

THIS! Unless you are a female or have some major connections, these are the things you need to have a real shot at getting to a legacy the majority of time. How many thousands of guys are out there with thousands of hours of jet PIC time with no call back from a legacy?

I'll try to wrap up what everyone is trying to say. Work hard, become a well rounded person, you will likely not have a choice in equipment or base (you seem young), build hours, volunteer, get a degree, and try to get into the military to fly jets. No one has the magic formula to get to the majors so throw everything at and hope and pray it sticks.

I've seen volunteering mentioned several times; does this mean in the community (boy scouts, homeless shelters, etc) or inside the company as a project officer, picnic planer, yada yada. What is LOSA?

I am all for enjoying the journey, but as a guy doing this as a second career, time is not my friend (late 40s). I want to learn the trade as Envoy PIC, but a chance to beat flow could mean a lot more financial security at 65.

That makes a lot more sense. As a late starter, time is of the essence. Apologies. I thought you were a wet behind the ears 23 yr old.

In terms of volunteering, they are talking about committee positions with the union. Something that sets you apart from just being a line holder. It's the feather in your cap amongst of a sea of line holders. LOSA stands for Line Operations safety audit. It's basically an observation by volunteer in the jump seat that looks for how much in or out of compliance the crew is for the purposes of gathering statistical data to improve training or focus on problem areas. It's a very good program, all data is anonymous.

He might be, I piled on to his question...I am behind the power curve on age (and hours), but if I can go full-time towards my 1500 ATP and put the wife to work at Wally World, we should make ends meet for a few years and then hopefully be an Envoy FO/CA and perhaps AA FO in the outyears. Chasing the dream...

I spoke to pilot in ATL this month that looked about my age. He said he started at 48 and is now a (Delta) regional FO. Not sure which regional. His feedback let me know that while getting my ATP may be a crazy idea, at least it's not insane.

Not insane at all. You only get one shot at life. If at all possible, do what makes you happy.

Something I have said over and over again. There is always more money, there isn't more time.
