Does FedEx send it in for them, then?

Not that I'm aware of. I believe the implied intent is to give your formal two weeks notice on your own before you show up to class.

Not sure I understand the question. Why would FedEx send a resignation letter in for a FedEx new hire?

When you start your first day, you bring a copy of the letter you used to terminate employment at your previous employer. In my case, I sent an email to my base chief pilot at my regional. I printed a copy of this letter and brought it to class. Very easy.

To ensure it was actually received by the previous employer. There's a well-known practice of not resigning from legacy airlines when pilots go to FedEx when times are bad and then going back to said legacies when times are good again.
