Every couple of years or so, this very issue with USAA seems to come up. It always inspires me to check around, again, to see if I'm overpaying on the various insurances that I have with them. So I logged on to the USAA site and found that between homeowners, auto insurance, and renters insurance (I own a rental property), I pay a little over $4900 a year. Auto insurance alone is $1900, for two newer Mercedes Benz's. When I look at companies like GEICO, Liberty Mutual, Allstate, etc, I find that I can indeed reduce my premiums, by perhaps a third. However, then I factor in the monies that USAA sends me, each year, and I again realize that it's cheaper for me to stay with them than to go elsewhere. This past December, USAA sent me a check for $622, which they call my subscriber account bonus. Then in February, they again sent me a "senior bonus" check for $1322. As well, they annually contribute to my Subscribers Savings Account, which now has over $13K in it. I think I'll stay right here. As for their degrading customer service, I really don't see that because I have little to no interaction with them. If I did, and it had gotten as bad as you guys are saying, I'd think about switching too.

Personally I moved from USAA to the Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU.com) several years back and the service is great. I recieved an NFCU rewards card with a high limit, free checking, and both of my cars are financed through them using the on-line approval service with automatic payment and all done with instantaneous approval. Couldn't be happier.

When you leave USAA due to their higher rates and poor service they will send you that 13K after 6 months. Your next three years of insurance just became paid for.

Left USAA years ago and haven't looked back. Went State Farm with local agent I can go talk to and Capitol One 360 for online banking and mortgage.

Do you have to be with USAA for a certain number of years before you start getting these checks and contributions from them? This is the first I've heard of these and I've been with them for over a decade.

Does anyone have experience with Pentagon Federal Credit Union? How competitive are their rates? Customer service OK?

Savings rates are comparable to USAA. Check website for loan rates. Rewards Card no longer pays cash, only points and redeem rate is $0.85/$1 spent (vs NFCU's 1.5% cash back). NavyFed much better all the way around!

We were with USAA for about 25 years. Paid them a lot of money, never got one of those checks. Maybe it's something new, thought I do seem to recall every now and then they'd send us a tiny check. Perhaps if your subscribers savings account is to a certain level, they send it to you. But the subscribers savings account has been around for a long time, you should have something in it. You get a notice every year.

I have heard of people cancelling all their USAA insurance, getting the SSA check after 6 months, and then going back. Apparently they will offer you a better deal to return.

When we moved out of Memphis many years ago, our auto insurance went up. I called and said, what the heck? Far less accidents and better drivers here than Memphis. The explanation was that when you move, they "re-evaluate", and we had had 8 claims overall. What, 8 claims? We'd had only one, of which they'd paid about $1500 out for. Turns out that if you filed a claim and it was below your deductible, or they didn't pay out-strike against you. I think they counted as a claim every single time I even called and asked a question.

GEICO is far cheaper if you have young drivers. They do not price higher for young drivers (which is a big deal), and USAA cannot compete with that.

Yes, and no. Depending on how the company does on an annual basis, and what the BOD decides to put in the Subscriber Savings Account, they will send you a Subscriber Account Bonus check, which is, for military officers (or ex-officers), 5% of the size of your SSA account.

IF you are the son or daughter of an officer, but not an officer yourself, you are entitled to the bonus check, however, it will be paid at a 3% rate. However, your offspring would not be eligible for the bonus check. It's a little confusing, as there are a number of companies within the USAA umbrella, and depending on which company you are actually doing business with, determines if you're eligible.

The Senior Bonus check, on the other hand, is paid once you reach 40 years of continuous membership.

PenFed is great. I don't get loans from anybody else anymore. You can do most everything online, customer service is fine. The only issue I have is that they have huge demand, because they generally offer a better deal than most lenders, so it can take awhile for loans to go through. The great thing is that if the delay is their fault, even if your lock expires, they don't hold it against you and raise their rates (unlike most lenders). They don't jerk you around and promise one rate, and then change it. They are very straightforward. However, since they keep their loans and do not sell them, they require plenty of paperwork. They won't give out low quality loans.

Every time I go looking for another lender, I come back to PenFed, because you can't beat their rates. Navy FCU comes very close, maybe even the same.
