Kept accruing seniority the last year and a half and now UA is hiring pretty significantly (they say 100/month indefinitely due to attrition.)

Just received the invite here to interview. I can hold out for another 6 mo while UA hired and still build my number. So in a tough choice. Obviously I will interview and I know the money will be significantly better at purple but besides the money my concerns are giving up close to 3 years seniority at UA to start at the bottom of purple and sacrificing potential QOL at UA. Clearly don’t have the job yet but given the opportunity I’m torn what to do. Family already been through hell last year and I want to give them the best direct route.

why I want purple:
-incredible company
-better stability
-no pax
-sooner chance to travel the world

my Concerns:
-first year pay
-giving up 3 yrs seniority (nearly)
-better seniority progression at UA
-stuck at the back curve of FDX hiring

im beyond thankful for this “dilemma” but I also want to make the best informed decision, should I get the offer, for my family.

appreciate any intel!
Tough call. But I think your assumption of “better seniority progression at UA” may be off. Sure they’ll hire more, but even so, with such a large seniority list, how far up it will you be %-wise say in 5 years? And what could you hold with that seniority? (And of course, one must consider if things will go as planned without a hiccup for the next 5+ years at pax carriers in particular...)

Lots of hiring here as well, but also a much smaller list and I think it would take much less time to hold something you might want (widebody, international, left seat, etc. if that’s your thing).

But whatever you decide, best not to put it off.

if you get hired at FedEx now why won’t you be able to start for another 1.5 years? People getting hired now are starting in three months. We still plan to hire almost another thousand people here so you would not be at the end of the hiring wave. If you are a committed commuter then I think it’s a no-brainer. Jump ship. I did and I have zero regrets. (I was actually in your same UA indoc.)

Might have mistyped. I could start as soon as they needed me. For now I believe I am a committed commuter however we have had conversations of moving to DEN but I think that’s more of my pipe dream than the families at this point in time.

valid points and I appreciate the insight. I don’t plan to put anything off. Will begin preparing for the FedEx interview ans get it scheduled. One of the things that is so attractive to me about this place is that there haven’t been any furloughs during the rough times (correct?). The passengers airlines are definitely much more fragile.

great to hear these stories! Yes it was painful but could have been worse. Will plan to prep for the interview and put forward my best effort. Thanks for the response.

Heard a story of a 15 yr United guy coming to FDX recently. How much is job security worth to you? I think in 20yrs you’ll laugh at this post if you make it on at purple.

For a commuter, there’s not better job than a FedEx job.

I flew for United for a year after leaving the regionals before coming to FedEx 4 years ago. It was a nice place, there were some great things, but by and large, FedEx is a solid place to be and the best kept secret out there. So many ways to get more days off, make more, work less. I’ve been happy with the decision.

Folks from all the big airlines are coming here every class.

A small trickle of guys leave FedEx during their first year or two to go to UA/DL/AA/Whatever during the good times.

A huge wave of guys leave (or at least try to leave) UA/DL/AA/Whatever after 5-7 years of service to go to FedEx during the bad times....

You might not lose as much seniority as you may think. First, if you were hired at UAL 1/20 and started here on 1/22, that’s only two years. Second, is it really two years worth of new hires behind you? How many have they hired since 1/20? Your seniority is only worth how many are below you. Longevity wise, you will not be at the higher pay scale. But you’ll make that up quickly at FedEx. So if you come here in 1/22, how may pilots would you have had below you at UAL? Probably not as many as you think considering they didn’t hire anyone since 3/20. It’ll probably be more like less than a years worth of people below you. Not insignificant but certainly not three years.
