All in all, the flying was a lot more fun at the fractional. A lot less automated and repetitious than airline flying, we went to a lot of places off the beaten track, and every once in a while you felt like the scheduling gods were smiling down upon you. One time we sat with a broken jet for three days in Palm Springs while the rest of the country froze. Another time we airlined to Shannon, Ireland and sat for two days waiting for a plane to show up so we could fly it to Cairo. We drank Guiness from the teat and stumbled the streets trying to make sure we looked right instead of left before stepping off the curb. Then there was the trip to Barcelona. And the one to Majorca. And etc.

So the flying was more fun and there was more chance for adventure every time you left the house. What wasn't fun was what I saw happen to guys post-acquisition. The feeling that we weren't in it together anymore. The camaraderie just vanished overnight. I saw a lot of guys I respected sell themselves down the river. I hope it was worth it.

So I make a ton more money now and work a lot fewer days to make it and I will retire far more securely than I would have had I stayed in the fractional. I fly with mostly good guys, a few tools here and there, and when we taxi into the gate at the end of a trip I'm in my car and driving home ten minutes later. I'm a tiny cog in a huge people-moving machine, I don't have to worry about getting ratted on by some douchebag because I spoke ill of management, and that's all well and good, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the flying I used to do.
I agree with you about the flying. I got tired of the repetitious airline flying, but glad to get the experience.
I like your perspective. Best wishes to you!

What is the big deal with the uniform? They wear a grey shirt rather than a white shirt. That’s a clown suit? I’d hate to hear what you guys think of the JetBlue uniform.

Black shoes, black pants with gold pinstripe, tan belts, grey shirts, champagne ties and silver epaulets.

It’s terrible, and I didn’t realize how bad it was until I hadn’t worn one for a year or two and saw it again on another person.

Default Phone Interview

I received an email from for a phone interview and wanted to get some thoughts on making the move.

Currently I am flying for a regional with about 300 121 time. At the rate I am flying, I should be eligible to upgrade late summer/early fall. I am currently a commuter, but will be based at near my home in May. The caveat to that is I will be dead last on the seniority list, with very little movement at that base. Also when I upgrade, I will go right back to commuting.

The obvious benefits with FX of being able to be domiciled within 20 mins of where I live is awesome. Also the 40k+ pay increase would definitely be nice.

My ultimate goal is to get on with UA, AA, or SWA as quickly as possible and try not to make a move that would impede that. Thoughts??

Quick synopsis of my background:
Army RW pilot, and Fed LE RW and FW Pilot
TT: 3000+
FW: 1100
121: 300

Default Phone interview

I just received an invite for a phone interview and wanted to get some thoughts.

I am currently with a regional with about 300 hours of 121 time. I currently commute, but will be based near my home in May. The caveat to the new base, is I will be last on the list and it is very stagnant. At the rate I am flying I should be eligible to upgrade late summer/early fall, and will go back to commuting.

This benefits with FX of being domiciled 20 mins from my house and being flown to and from trips is very appealing. Also the bump is pay is nice touch as well.

My ultimate goal is to get on with UA, AA, or SWA. I would like to get some thoughts from people who are familiar with this type of flying on jumping ship, if the opportunity should arise.

A quick synopsis of my background.
Mil RW pilot, previous LE FW and RW Pilot.
TT: approx 3000 hours
FW: approx 1100 (300 turbine)
121: 300

For what it's worth, living in base is everything. Commuting is for the birds.

How old are you?

Which is more important to you? Career earnings or lifestyle on the road and type of flying?

Jumping from your regional to a fractional would not be the most expeditious way to get to your ultimate goal employer.

You should also consider XOJet since they have a recently-announced “bridge” hiring program to SWA. If the domicile situation works at XOJet it would be a no brainer since you could continue on to SWA down the line...

I read somewhere that pilots are allowed to switch bases within a year.
Is there a limit how long you have to stay in your initial domicile before putting in a request to switch to another one?

Also, if initially assigned the 7/7 schedule, is there a length of time required before making a request to move to PBS or vice-versa?
