CFI renewal question
I have to renew my CFI this month and I would like some opinions on my interpretation of 61.197a2i. I have sent 9 students in the preceeding 24 calender months 3 of which failed 1st attempt making my average 66%, but if I just take 5 from the middle of the 24 calender months then I had only one failure making my percentage 80% (good enough for the renewal). Do I have to show a record of all nine students or can I just show the five, for the renewal? Here is the reg:
(i) A record of training students showing that, during the preceding 24 calendar months, the flight instructor has endorsed at least five students for a practical test for a certificate or rating and at least 80 percent of those students passed that test on the first attempt;

I believe you have to use all 9 of them. The FAA is just setting a minumum of 5. By saying this you could have endorsed only 4 and even if 4 pass you are not eligable because you did not meet the required 5. In your case, you have endorsed more than 5 students, but of the total number of students you endorsed, less than 80% passed on the first try. I used the Jeppisen online renewal. It was not all that expensive and took me about a week to do. It gives full directions on submitting the paperwork right to AOPA. I had my temp certificate via email within days of them receiving it. Anyway, I hope this helps a little.
Good Luck,

I'm not sure which website it is but I'd recommend looking for the website which gives you lifetime renewals for a one time fee. Meaning you pay once and can access the website every 2 years to do the online refresher to renew your cert.
That'd probably be the easiest way to go.

I use AOPA...$120 each time, but they do your paperwork which is worth it to me.

Just use American Flyers. It's completely hassle free. I used it about a year ago and it only takes 8 hours of reading through their website lessons. You really don't need to be there for 8 hours. I just let the computer run so it would log the time and then you take a short easy multiple choice test at the end of the section. I believe there were 4 two hour sessions. When you pass all of them you can print out a certificate which you take to your local FSDO where someone signs some forms and gives you your renewed CFI license.

I would recommend the American Flyers program, but do the in-class version. Yes, it costs a little extra, but its a "wham-bam-thankyou-ma'am" out the door in two days, and you've got yourself a wet CFI ticket all over again! Yes, you have to spend 2 whole days of your time off in a class room, but they make it really fun, and its really interesting to see who you run into at these things. It's also a good way to take time away from the wife/girlfriend, and just have a guys weekend...(or vice-versa if you are female)
Cheers.

Yes, it's possible. I think that you need to be an active airline CA in order to qualify. Basically the FAA is giving you CFI experience credit for babysitting FO's
