Default cfi-i question

Got lucky and got my first cfi job in September trying to make myself sound better then the furloaded airline guys going back to instructing.

So my question is and ive used the search option for awhile with mixed results. Some people say the ii check ride is the easiest one ever and others say it was just like their initial check ride. So what was your check ride like? Where I work it would be with a dpe who is at my flight school and knows me already since i work for him, he owns the place. Most people there say it wasnt too hard, questions on the instraments and teach a lesson on an approach then some regulation stuff. with a few tricky ones that dont come up that often.

Any advice or tips on what to expect and how to pre pare for this.

Still in the beginning of it. Not really teaching the lessons yet with the guy im working on it with. Just talking about the instruments and how they work. Find this part pretty tuff to make it flow smoothly with so much technical things involved.

You are going to be the best judge, You are working for the guy and know him pretty well. How I would think of it, is that he makes more money off you if have CFII so he may take how good you teach into perspective. I would guess not knowing anything about your personal situation that as long as you don't completely bomb the test then you are good to go. I would even suggest you have him do your training too. I am currently getting my CFI from a DPE... So they know what the end result should be, therefore they can teach you to teach others to their standards.

being a DPE AND still teaching isn't illegal, only frowned apon by some FAA guys at the FSDO, but, no one can make them happy so ... no worries

The CFI-I checkride is what you make of it. It will be easy if you've studied and are instrument current. I would recommend the ASA Instrument Oral Exam guide that you probably used for you Instrument preperation at one point and the Instrument Flying Handbook. Other good ones are the Chart guide and an Aviation weather guide of some sort. Pretty much know the regs, know where to find them and how to teach and you'll do fine. Technically the 'Lesson Plan' portion should have been on the CFI initial but I was asked to formally teach unusual attitudes during my II. The flight will be two approaches (minimum) and probably an instrument maneuver that you must teach (in my case unusual attitudes). I would suggest getting a gouge on the DE you are going with and looking through the PTS. Good luck and I'm sure you'll do fine.

"We're not happy 'till you're not happy!" Official FAA slogan. Federal Agrivation Administration

For me, It was a breeze. But then again, I have been shooting approaches and what not the whole time when i come back from the practice area while i was doing my commercial and CFI. Some of my students who haven't touched approach plates since they got their instrument on the other hand...............

When doing my CFI-I I stumbled across this website. It basically takes the PTS and makes an outline of it. Very good reference tool, but still make sure you back it up with FAA publications cause there is a few things missing.

The Certified Flight Instructor Instrument Rating, CFII

Other then that, my ride was basically a repeat of my instrument rating. Holds, arcs, approaches, etc. Practice in the sim to get those procedures down. Good luck

I wish I had thought to do that during my commercial training! Now I'm working on my CFII as my initial and haven't done any IFR training since the single-engine approaches during my multi-check.... It's frustrating to say the least.

If you are proficient, it's a simple ride. Not quite as simple as the MEI, but still straightforward. You've likely been doing some instruction since you got your CFI so that's useful. I hope it means you can relax a little and display your skill. That was the biggest difference between my initial and CFII and especially my MEI. You know this guy, you know what he likes and what he likes to fail, so there won't be too many surprises. Being prepared and calm will make it an "enjoyable ride" if there is such a thing.
