You need to have a good command of written and spoken English to do well at Emirates. The new pilots that have been having trouble recently can almost all be traced back to inability to fully understand what is in writing in the manuals and what is discussed in class.

Typhoon,
I was looking at the EK website and I have a question on how you are paid? After you have completed your 78 hours for the month and begin to get the 400 per dhrm overide is this all that you get per hour or is this 400 in addition to another amount. Please explain this to me. It seems that with all the overtime flying they have you doing, this number might become important.
Just sign me mercenary to the core!
Please explain.

Assuming that you are a prospective DEC. The Dh 400/hr in excess of the overtime bar is ALL THAT YOU GET other than your basic salary. Pretty underwhelming huh.

I am thinking about coming to EK as a First Officer, but some of these threads are steering me the wrong way. Is EK really that bad? Is the fatique really a problem? What is Dubai really like? I would appreciate any answers that you may have...

Different people have different likes and dislikes. You may like Dubai or you may not. It really is a personal choice that can't be answered by somebody else.
Same goes for EK. EK may well be better than your current position or it may not. It depends on the things that are important to you. You see a lot of the negative on these boards and some of the positive, but your happiness depends on you, not on what other people think. Obvioulsy I'm on record as liking Dubai and liking Emirates, but others are not.

If u can, bring the family to Dubai for a 4 day visit...look 'round at what u can live in on an EK budget...look through the facade of the glitter and glass to the deep reality of it all....have an EK expat show you 'round...never mind the dismal postings you read formulate your own opinion...make sure the "other half" can live with it...(most important) the airline bull**** is the same everywhere to certain degree..that's the least of the considerations to be made before moving here, most of us are resilient to roll with operational headaches and the like, but when it carries over to home life, then the wheels begin to come off the wagon
