The most junior captain on the seniority list right now is a July ‘18 hire. Also, keep in mind that there was no hiring and no upgrades for a year (covid) between that pilot’s hire date and now. So, upgrade time will effectively drop by a year once upgrade hits the post covid hires.
Having said that, retention is the hangup going forward. As DumboDrop pointed out, there were a lot of issues that contributed to our hiring issue which lead to a backwards moving seniority list for a few months due to attrition. The hiring kinks have been fixed and recruiting and, other than the temporary setback, filling classes has never been, and likely won’t be going forward, an issue. It’s keeping those new hires that have filled the classes that is always the big question mark each month. However, Indigo won’t just let attrition shrink and implode their airline. So, at some point they will address it. In true Indigo fashion though, it won’t be until they absolutely have to… They just haven’t hit that point yet.
I would anticipate that upgrade times will level off around the 3 year mark. Likely less if we plug the attrition problem. Anyone telling you 8 years is speaking out of emotion, not fact, and I would suspect they are a pretty disgruntled individual.
