The simple (or not so) fact is that a large part of our job is "impression management." Some people would not be bothered by pilots with beards, some would. Some people wouldn't be bothered by pilots with tatoos or pony tails either. Some however would.
Just like in the cockpit when there is a difference of opinion; we defer to the most conservative position.
That's the business we are in.
There are places you can go fly with a beard. The Mainline US carriers aren't one of them.

Didn't the Captain of the Red October have a beard?
Well, not a good example. That was a Russian Submarine.
I think at the end of the day, the company runs the dress code. Not sure why anyone thinks writing to ALPA would help with that. No way would ALPA waste bargaining capital/power on that.

4 pages of complete wankers. A bunch of emasculated, straight white males bad mouthing each other over PC BS.
If a SWM wants to wear a beard, who cares. The only reason it is still disapproved is that no SWM with a beard has grown a pair, and fought it. The fight will last 1.03 seconds. Our company, and every other, will roll over and cave. They know they will lose.
I want to grow my bear, nose, and ear hair. And then braid all three, together. I think I can also pull off my eyebrow hair (a single row, left to right), and add them into the artistic fray that is the rest of my head hair.
All I have to do is claim it is my religious belief, I am attracted to my fellow males, or I really want to have a "sex assignment" surgery, and then it is OK.
We can call ourselves, "Men with Alternative Hair Styles".
In ten years, we will get our own public bathrooms, next to: Men, Women, Not Sure, LBGTQ, NAMBLA, and Hot Female Teachers that Sleep with Young Male Students.
The end.

Haha Probe that was funny man!
In all honestly, US carriers with the exception of Hawaiian are probably the only carriers in the world that don't allow beards. It's not a big deal, as long as standards are enforced. That being said, with the current lackadaisical approach to appearance a lot of US pilots have, then beards are probably a terrible idea. I am certainly no uniform Nazi by any stretch of the word. However, some of us are doing each other no favors in this department and the few running around with yellow shirts, dockers, huge bellies, and "comfortable" footwear are doing a heck of a lot more damage to our image then a neat beard would.
