Sorry guys, I have to weigh in on this one. A couple of years ago, I had about a month long vacation. So, I did the pilot thing, when on vacation, don't shave. I did trim.

It came in gray!!!! Oh, that wasn't there the last time I tried it!! (Well it really came in about 3 or 4 different colors.)

The bottom line was, my 16-year old daughter said it didn't look good, and it had to go. So, it went. If she says so, let it be so.

Duh! You forgot to wear the Russian Sub Commander coat.

You'll command respect at the airport with this look, plus, what do 16 year olds know about the Russian Navy?

This rule will change for airlines right after it changes for the navy, and right before the marine corps allows beards.

Well not the Navy or Marines, but it would seem that pop culture might be changing the attitude in the military already...

My personal feelings aside, I am curious in today's environment, how a company can have different standards for different employee groups. Are all males at UAL not allowed to have a beard? Of course not.

I'll take that one step further...

Some United pilots ARE allowed to have long hair AND don't have to wear ties.

And I bet the guys above that think beards are unprofessional, are fine with this.

I believe the Army allows Sikhs to wear beards, and whatever it is they call their head covering, and extremely long hair underneath that covering.

Somebody just has to grow a pair and fight it.

Surprised no one has hijacked this thread into a 'lose the tie' campaign.

This won't happen for a very long time for the exact same reason we are still wearing a uniform shirt designed in 1920 and pretty much the exact same uniform that the US Navy has worn for around a century: 55-65 year olds are making the decisions and throw out the need to look "professional" even though it looks dated and downright sad on some of the physical specimens that inhabit US airline cockpits.
Look at VAs uniforms. They are sharp, modern looking, still conservative, yet somehow both comfortable and functional (and going away soon). Customers love them. The pilots that I have talked to like them.
The beard rule is dumb, the bus driver/ship captain uniform is horrible, but until there is a big movement to change it, it's here to stay.

Gee....it took all of 20 seconds to find a FAA Advsiory Circular on the topic:

AC 120-43 - The Influence of Beards on Oxygen Mask Efficiency

And a more recent FAA Order (now intergrated in the the FAA Inspector Handbook) that specifically permits air carriers to deny cockpit jump seats to bearded inspectors:

USE OF THE FLIGHT DECK JUMP SEAT BY AVIATION SAFETY INSPECTORS WITH FACIAL HAIR

This is not gonna change anytime soon.

Two words: potential liability.
