Astronaut Pay

Standard government deal...
If you're military and deployed to a location where they have to put you up in a hotel, you get generous per diem, based on local COL.
If you're deployed to a FOB in the middle of Bumfukistan, with a nice tent and all the MRE's and tepid water you can drink, no per diem. Same while deployed on a ship.
At least now they give you $225/month and a tax break for combat zone service. Even though per diem can be over $300/DAY in some places

[QUOTE=Rama;3895935]Think you have a bad contract?
The stranded astronauts only get $5/day for their nine month ordeal.

It's too bad they had to spend so many extra months in Space.
SpaceEx offered to recover them around the 2nd month. Request denied by the President. The same President who didn't invite the #1 EV car maker in the World, to an EV synposium in DC. That's seems strange! Wonder why that was?

I knew some people in that biz. There actually has been a mutiny or two over the years due to fatigue and workload on the ISS. At some point you get sick of doing science, cleaning, and mx 14 hours/day seven days a week and just want to curl up, float in a corner somewhere, and read or watch the earth roll by.

If you had a house/condo/appt out in town you'd keep that and the housing allowances even if single. Same for married enlisted. Single personal living in base housing typically had to move out on long deployments.
The wardroom could, if it chose to, charge more than BAS so as to have better food, more ammeneties, etc.

In the Navy, officers had to basically return their BAS to the ship when at sea, to cover food.

Too bad? It was an opportunity of a lifetime and something they've already stated they were grateful to do. They had a short stay, scored with a long stay, anything nearly any astronaught would give anything for.
They weren't marooned. They were able to stay an extended period. They considered it a gift.

I was completely ignorant of the toll extended space travel has on an astronaut’s body. Watching this last group exiting the spacecraft upon its return to earth as they were loaded onto their personal mobility devices - gurneys, shocked me. The loss of bone density, radiation exposure, and various skin rashes, in my opinion, warrants a bonus in their pay packet.
