More than a dozen Russian drones entered Poland overnight, prompting NATO to scramble fighter jets to shoot them down in what Western officials described on Wednesday as a dangerous escalation of the war in neighboring Ukraine.
It was the first time in the history of NATO that alliance fighters had engaged enemy targets in allied airspace, officials said. The drone incursion prompted Poland’s government to invoke Article 4 of the NATO treaty, a rarely used mechanism triggered when a member is under threat that prompts a formal discussion within the alliance.

It’s weasel-worded to the point it really doesn’t compel any actual action. From the NATO treaty:
https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/o...exts_17120.htm
So, basically, if any NATO member feels threatened, they are all going to discuss it. Not unreasonable at all, but NATO has had meeting after meeting to discuss this war since it began, even agreeing (except for Spain) to raise their defense expenditure target from 2% to 5% (well, 3.5% dedicated defense and 1.5% infrastructure projects that have a dual use that also support defense).
Basically, Article 5 allows individual countries “to take such action as they deem necessary” which x let’s face it - they were going to do with or without Article Five, pretty much by definition.
Aticle 51 of the UN Charter simply states:
https://legal.un.org/repertory/art51.shtml
And given both Russia and China are permanent members of the Security Council with veto power, the UN Security Council is unlikely to be able to take any action in any event.
So, yeah, the violation of Poland airspace by the Russian drones is an escalation and everybody ought to be looking at the implications and potential actions, but it’s wrong to think that Article Four or Article Five has much to do about it. They are somewhat enabling but by no means compelling. They basically just green light NATO nations doing what they were going to do anyway. Some NATO countries (Hungary, Slovakia, Spain, for instance) weren’t going to do anything before and probably still won’t. A lot of NATO countries simply can’t do much after 35 years of underfunding their own militaries. A NATO no-fly zone over Poland might stop (or at least slow down) future drone overflights but does nothing but restore the status quo ante, not really helping Ukraine that much.

Article 4
The Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened.
Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security .
Article 5
The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security .
Aticle 51 of the UN Charter simply states:
https://legal.un.org/repertory/art51.shtml
Chapter VII — Action with respect to Threats to the Peace, Breaches of the Peace, and Acts of Aggression
Article 51
“Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security. Measures taken by Members in the exercise of this right of self-defence shall be immediately reported to the Security Council and shall not in any way affect the authority and responsibility of the Security Council under the present Charter to take at any time such action as it deems necessary in order to maintain or restore international peace and security.”

This video does a good job explaining what Putin is trying to do. It’s called reflexive control. Air defense systems are a limited resource, so by sending drones into polish airspace Russia is trying to make nato decide between giving Ukraine air defense systems or using them for their nato partners.

But these were aircraft and artillery manned by NATO personnel that they had no intention of deploying to Ukraine in any event. Even the “coalition of the willing” isn’t willing to openly deploy their troops into Ukraine without a cease fire and even that only if backed up by an American backstop:
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe...ce-2025-02-26/
European militaries wouldn’t go into Yugoslavia without America leading the charge during the breakup of that country. They were unable/unwilling to handle the Serbian Army to stop genocide on the doorstep of Europe back then when their militaries were actually in better shape than they are now.

Instead of the AWACS, at least so far.

NATO has launched an initiative to reinforce the defense of Europe’s eastern flank after a Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace this week, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced on Friday.
The “Eastern Sentry” operation will commence in the coming days and will involve assets from Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and others, Rutte said.
“Eastern Sentry will add flexibility and strength to our posture and make clear that, as a defensive alliance, we are always ready to defend,” he added.
Rutte said that Russia’s “dangerous and unacceptable” drone incursion on Wednesday was “not an isolated incident.”

Among the equipment dedicated to the operation are two F-16s and an anti-air warfare frigate from Denmark, three Rafales from France, and four Eurofighters from Germany, according to a press release from the alliance.

It reviews the book "Army Made of Cardboard" ( Wojsko z Tektury)
The basic claim is that pretty much all equipment from the USA requires codes from the US government in order for them to be used.
The F-35, artillery, long range missiles, even the Abrahms tank.
Codes that can be changed or withheld on a moments notice.
This has obviously existed for a long while. As I lack the background, perhaps some readers on this site can probably advise if this is nonsense, or if there is basis of truth in it.
Regardless, to me the article shows a loss of trust in America.
1. If the assertion is somewhat accurate, it was an accepted feature by our NATO allies on purchase. Not an issue- America is an ally, has our back and can be trusted.
Now, at least with some, they are thinking they made a mistake in trusting a generational ally.
or
2. Even if it is all wrong, the fact that this is in a generally read online publication, shows that many believe that America can no longer be trusted.
Building takes years, tenacity plus physical and moral courage.
Destroying what has been built takes the blink of an eye.
