Guns!

..... anything can happen at any given time. Sometimes people would like to think they may have time to wake up, find the mag, chamber a round and all in enough time to deal accordingly.... but sadly bad situations usually never happen the way you think they will.
oh and.. I usually clean my gun after each shooting session... maybe that's extreme...but I also use synthetic gun lube.... seems to not heat up as much as the regular stuff

Nice looking piece there AZ.... I'm looking to replace my cheap 12 GA with a pistol grip one that's a bit more suited for home defense, then eventually get my CCW and jump into the world of pistols. I certainly appreciate all the knowledge you guys have and are willing to share.
Side note, as an owner of a shotgun and two rifles (.22 and AK-47, thank you Dunhams), I'm proof that it is possible to be a gun lover and a *gasp!* Obama supporter...

Thanks everyone.
I also bought a separate cleaning kit at the time of purchase as the only cleaning tool that came with the gun was a bristle brush, so I've got all the basic goods required for cleaning now.
The owners manual has instructions on how to field-strip the gun and clean it, though it doesn't seem to be super specific (for someone who has never done it) on the cleaning instructions. I'll probably try to find more detailed info on that else where. Possibly from someone at the range later today.
Going to the range today to shoot it for the first time and after that I'll practice field-stripping it and cleaning it.
For right now I think I'll keep a loaded magazine in the gun, but a round not chambered until proper gun handling rules become muscle memory. It's just me and my girlfriend at my place and we rarely ever have visitors, and definitely no children ever around, so I feel comfortable in that regards. I've had no problem remembering the do's and don'ts, since it's so important, but I still have to devote a little bit of brain power to it.
I'll report back later today with my initial impessions on the gun.

Longish post....
Fired the new gun today. Put 100 rounds through it and everything was fine except for two times when I was racking the slide to put a round in the chamber, the round didn't fully load and I had to clear it, which was almost surely just me not using good technique to rack the slide. I was more attentive to that issue after that and there were no more problems, everything worked perfectly.
The gun is accurate; I was able to keep my pattern very tight and on my intended target. One thing that I'm very pleased with in being a new shooter is how accurate I've been shooting. I don't know if it is because I've always been fascinated with firearms and have done lots of reading and question asking.....or....dare I say.....all the vidya games....or maybe I'm just doing something right. Watched a couple young guys in the lane next to me....lets say they made me feel a lot better about my own shooting!
At any rate, bought a range bag, my own hearing/eye protection so that I don't have to use the nasty loaners from the range.
Has anybody here ever participated in Defensive Pistol competitions, a la IDPA type stuff? The range I go to runs a local league modeled after IDPA style contests, and you can enter for $12. It sounds like it might be a fun way to practice and build proficiency/confidence with my weapon.

Sounds like you had fun! There is a pistol league in our area, my school has a team. I haven't joined, because it's like $100 to get in, and you have to use a .22 pistol (Which I don't have, and I can't see myself buying a .22 pistol just for competing). I could also rent one, but that just takes the cost up more. It does look like fun, though.

When you rack the slide to load a round, are you pulling back and releasing, or pulling back and guiding the slide forward? A common mistake is called "riding the slide". That would be guiding the slide forward. Many people do it to "preserve" the life of the gun. The correct method is to pull it back, and let it go. You're not hurting the gun because every time you shoot it, the slide is slamming back to its aft limit, then going forward with the help of the spring. You shouldn't really have any jamming problems with a nice clean new gun. Unless it's a brand new Ruger Mark III, but that's another topic.

Anyone here have experience with Benelli shotguns?
Bought my first gun a month ago, and ever since then I've been thinking non-stop about getting another....and then another...and, well you get the idea...
I've got my eye on the Benelli SuperNova Tactical with pistol grip, shown here. It's a 12ga. Only a 4+1 capacity, so I'll probably get at least a 2 round mag extension if I go with the Benelli, (and a mounting rail for my surefire). I'll be getting it next month unless I can be convinced to go with something else.
Of course there is also the tried and true Remington and Mossberg guns as well...yet I really like what I've read about the Benelli, and it is in the same price range. (Plus shotgun shells are cheaper than ammo for my handgun!)
Speaking of ammo....anyone know where the best deals on .40 S&W can be had?
