Relaxed and complacent are two different things. In follow the book, but I don't play "this is a checkride" at all times. Again, relax.

Hey guys I try to do things by the book and I made a mistake. My issue wasn't the guy calling me out, it was the way he freaked out about it. My bad for putting in this forum. This is one of the few threads that is fun... 80's right let's move on and let the fun continue.

Just an interjection in here:

Fly so that if the flight suddenly becomes a checkride, you only have to wait to say that you're in the top 1% of angry birds scores in the world until you're above 10,000 feet (and refrain from playing said game in flight in this situation). Other than that, each flight preferably should be a satisfactory line check.

It was always funny the guys I flew with at the regionals that would have a checkride approaching and freak out saying "ok I'm going to fly standard this trip." Uhh... what do you do other times?

The saying of "this is an easy job, don't make it difficult" doesn't mean it's the easiest job in the world and should never mean that. It's an easy job know what to expect, to do what's expected (given that you have the ability to live up to what's expected), and go home and not think about it if you don't want to.

btw- if it wasn't obvious the sarcasm in my when to call for the descent checklist comment earlier, it should have been. Flying standard doesn't mean being a DB about nitpicky things.

I was messing with you. If you're coming down hill like a freaking stone, what you did is no big deal at all.

And the way the guy dealt with it was definitely the TOTD. It's an easy job (Purple Drank passes out here), and he made it difficult by not dealing with it nicely.

If he wanted you to wait until after 18, he could have calmly said "hey, mind if we wait until 18 to do that?" That would have set the expectation and no lecturing needed.

I've seen the other side of this. I've had over eager new fo's on my legs ask over and over again if I'm going to call for a checklist before its time for that checklist. If I've forgotten it's one thing but reminding me before its time gets old fast

So have I, and I speak from that experience. If the guy is doing it over and over again- ask them why and pull out the book and show them what the trigger is for that checklist. Many times there is flexibility in the timing of the checklist, but if they keep doing so, ask them to wait for your prompt unless you've clearly forgotten it. There have only been a couple times in my career that I've had to really get on to people. There is just not a need for aggression/lecturing in 99.999% of situations.

We are programmed to try to do right as a general population. If they are doing something repeatedly wrong, show them where it says it.

One thing off the top of my head I used to deal with routinely was FO's not having the checklist out when they called it out (because other "laid back" captains did the same thing). Just a quick "at least make me think you're reading it" solved that every time. Laid back doesn't mean lazy and careless!

Wait a minute it doesn't say anything about "sarcasm" or "I'm messing with you" in the SOP. That must be why I didn't catch on right away.

.... Cue the laughter, I'll be here all weekend

If you ever don't get my sarcasm again or call for a checklist at the wrong time, so help me...
