Nu

+1. Well put NU. There will always be these types. As long as they knew ahead of time the FO is new, then there should be an aura of understanding, especially those entering their first 121 gig.

Sounds like another tool is born.

Are you serious? So next time I walk off the plane so upset that I'm shaking, I should just take that the guy was teaching me something. I'm sure you've never read back a clearance wrong either. Keep in mind that none of the others had me this upset before, and several months later, when I flew with him again, we had the exact same problems...

He's the moron for not understanding that ATL doesn't tell you a runway with the clearance- it is dependent off your RNAV SID. :)

Some guys are just wound too tight and forget that it's a two pilot operation. A favorite pastime of mine in a situation like that is to press the guys buttons. You know what makes him mad, so just... help him get there and enjoy the show!

I was a fairly new FO and at the beginning of a 4 day, my CA briefs on APU starting after we land at each station. In other words, which station to start the APU and which ones to not. Well there's no way remember any of this, so on 1st landing I simply ask him again if he wants the APU on. Again I'm new and have no idea who has ground power and who doesn't. So he turns to me and asks "Do you remember the briefing I gave you about that?"
"Umm no, I got everything mixed up." So he huffs and reminds me that CVG is a no APU station. Got it!

Later in the trip we land in ATL. This is my first time in ATL as a pilot, ever! I called in our on and in times (no ACARS) and he yells at me for calling :33 instead of :36.
"Umm I didn't hear you say a thing to me about the times."
"Well I told you about 2 minutes ago. Aren't you listening?"

A few minutes later, I'm getting the clearance for our next leg. I was very careful to read the notes on the Jepps about how you only tell clearance your ramp and only read back the Squawk code. Well I slip up slightly but it was no big deal with ATC. The controller was very nice about it. Well then Mr. Toolbag asks me which runway he gave us...
"Umm, I have no idea" What airport gives us a runway in the clearance, I'm thinking? Again, I've never been to ATL. The guy didn't give a runway.
"He told you it was 8L."

So then he's had enough of me and lectures me about how I don't listen to anything. His briefings, how I should have read the Jepp pages on how to get the clearance in ATL. I was almost shaking at this point.

This was 5 years ago and I've learned not to take crap like that anymore.

Tell him to open his freaking Jepps and read. ATL clearance doesn't assign runways. It's RNAV departure dependent.

Maybe the CA should actually know what's going on? Perhaps he should know how to actually read his Jepp charts.

Captains, instructors, people in leadership positions who don't take the time to train, mentor, instruct, etc, are tools. I've been doing this for a long time. The most effective method, by a landslide, is to take the time to do it right and lead by example. ATL is a different animal. I can understand why new guys are a little clueless.

I've found a lot of the captains who take the time to "train" their FO's are not the ones you want to listen to anyways!

All kidding aside though NU, the NO FLY list punishes who during line construction? That's right, the FO. It's a cruel system.

Only if the FO gives a crap about making more than min guarantee....
