Your buddy is acting tool-ish, too. Showing that documentation is required, uniform or not. A smart alec response when asked to do what is required is not the best way to hitch a free ride.

The Delta Captain acted appropriately. Your friend needs a "refresher" course in jumpseating it sounds like.

I agree. Sorry YLpilot - but your buddy was a tool for making that comment. He should have that documentation out and ready to go every time. I know it's hit or miss out there, but why put the Captain in the position to have to ask?

I'm not saying it warranted kicking your buddy off (although I personally think it was an effective way to make a point), but a little lesson on JS etiquette was deserved at a minimum.

The tool here was your buddy, not the DL CA. The response from the CA was spot on, and I envision it as being said spontaneously without missing a beat.

I have to agree. While I happen to find it a bit OTT, and most captains will be happy with the JS pass and one's badge, the official requirement is for the JS rider to present his pass, his badge, his license, and his Medical. I always have them out when I ask for a JS, and I've been doing this for more than two decades now.

Your friend should have kept his mouth shut. He learned a life-lesson (hopefully).

Yep. Especially if the guy in question was going to ride up front, or even if it was a possibility. Every time someone doesn't check all that is another fairly small risk but with severe consequences for one of the biggest and most necessary "perks" of the job. What's to gain by "keeping it cazh"? Sometimes the wrong people get that far. The document check could be the only way to catch it and it takes 10 seconds.

Props to the Captain for smacking down the little entitled smart alec with asymetrical buthurt. I hope he still would have let him ride if he got the hint, apologized and admitted his mistake though.

First rule of jumpseating is never talk about jumpseating.

Second rule of jumpseating is have all your paperwork in your hand and if the Captain doesn't want it, he'll hand it right back (or wave it off).

Third rule of jumpseating is save the personality until the door is closed, you're off the gate, and you've had a chance to feel the tone of the crew.

Sounds like your buddy broke all three rules.

I save the personality until we are above 10,000', then I open with, "You guys screwed me in the merger!".

Always a great ice breaker.

I think the tool is you YLpilot, just for trying to make the DL pilot look like a tool and the obvious reasons why your post totally backfired. Your bud was disrespectful of the CA and the HS privilege, I'm sure he learned the free of charge lesson.

The only thing I would have done different than the DL cap after the "motorcycle lic comment",
- yes son I need to see your mopped license- then show him the way out my AC.

LOL

Must make for a high JS attrition rate and/or lots of move-backs to the last row.
