Tool of the day

The DL MD88 CA who denied my buddy the jumpseat. The guy asked for his cert and medical along with his badge (he was in uniform) and my buddy said jokingly "You want to see my motorcycle license too?" Reply: "Son if you are going to be a smarta** you can find another ride." The FO did the whole mime a gun in his mouth schtick after this exchange. That's going to be a loooong 4 day.

I'm not saying it warranted kicking your buddy off (although I personally think it was an effective way to make a point), but a little lesson on JS etiquette was deserved at a minimum.

I have to agree. While I happen to find it a bit OTT, and most captains will be happy with the JS pass and one's badge, the official requirement is for the JS rider to present his pass, his badge, his license, and his Medical. I always have them out when I ask for a JS, and I've been doing this for more than two decades now.
Your friend should have kept his mouth shut. He learned a life-lesson (hopefully).

I agree. Sorry YLpilot - but your buddy was a tool for making that comment. He should have that documentation out and ready to go every time. I know it's hit or miss out there, but why put the Captain in the position to have to ask?

Props to the Captain for smacking down the little entitled smart alec with asymetrical buthurt. I hope he still would have let him ride if he got the hint, apologized and admitted his mistake though.

Second rule of jumpseating is have all your paperwork in your hand and if the Captain doesn't want it, he'll hand it right back (or wave it off).
Third rule of jumpseating is save the personality until the door is closed, you're off the gate, and you've had a chance to feel the tone of the crew.
Sounds like your buddy broke all three rules.

First rule of jumpseating is never talk about jumpseating.

Always a great ice breaker.

I think the tool is you YLpilot, just for trying to make the DL pilot look like a tool and the obvious reasons why your post totally backfired. Your bud was disrespectful of the CA and the HS privilege, I'm sure he learned the free of charge lesson.
The only thing I would have done different than the DL cap after the "motorcycle lic comment",
- yes son I need to see your mopped license- then show him the way out my AC.
